Fight Against Corruption: Declaration of Assets Not Enough – NPP Communication Team Member

The Bono Regional New Patriotic Party’s communication team member, Miss Albertha Twumwaa, advocates for accountability, transparent governance, and individual commitment to fight corruption.

She believes that declaring assets by government appointees should not be the sole measurement and alternative to curb corruption and related cases.

Miss Twumwaa emphasized that fighting state looting and corruption requires strict law enforcement against individuals involved in corruption without fear or favour, beyond just declaring assets.

She noted that government appointees can declare their assets and still engage in corruption, escaping prosecution by being shielded by their superiors.

Miss Twumwaa made these comments during a political discussion on Sunyani-based Ark FM on Wednesday, responding to President Mahama’s call for all appointees to declare their assets before 31st March.

President John Dramani Mahama has recently warned that appointees who fail to declare their assets risk of severe punishment, including removal from office.

Reacting to the directives from the President, Miss Twumwaa suggests that declaring assets should not only be used as a tool for cover-ups for public office holders to steal state resources and that additional deterent mechanisms should be considered to make corruption unpleasant for all.

Albertha stressed that some appointees declared their assets but still engaged in misappropriation of funds and corruption-related cases.

She called on all politicians to pledge their commitment to transparency while serving in public institutions.

Notwithstanding, Albertha Twumwaa has urged Ghanaians to demand accountability from public servants and institutions, ensuring transparency in managing the country’s resources.

According to the Bono Regional NPP communication team member, it’s in line Ghanaians constitutional right to question the suspicious source of wealth of public officials.

Mis. Twumwaa believes demanding accountability from public institutions had become imperative because many of them had failed to be accountable to the tax payers.

She said it behoved the citizenry to ensure that they were not taken for granted while some few persons misapplied taxes and other resources entrusted in their care.
