Empowering Women in Construction: Ashanti TVET and GIZ Offer Skills Training and Job Opportunities

In a strategic effort to promote gender equality and enhance employability in the construction sector, the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana TVET Service, in partnership with GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) under the Invest for Jobs initiative, has launched the “Female Talents in Construction Project”. This ambitious programme is designed to equip young women with technical expertise, professional certification, and practical industry experience, thereby opening doors for sustainable careers in construction trades.
The initiative targets young women aged 15 to 35 years residing in the Ashanti Region, whether they are fresh TVET or engineering graduates or currently employed in construction companies seeking to upgrade their skills. The programme focuses on a broad range of construction trades, including Building Construction, Plumbing, Tiling, Electricals and Solar Installation, Woodwork, Welding and Fabrication, Heavy-Duty Operations, and Structural Painting, enabling participants to acquire hands-on knowledge in high-demand technical fields.
According to the Ashanti Regional TVET Director, the project underscores the region’s commitment to empowering women and fostering inclusivity within traditionally male-dominated trades. “This initiative goes beyond training; it is about transforming lives. We want young women in Ashanti to confidently pursue careers in construction, break gender stereotypes, and demonstrate their professional capabilities,” the Director emphasized.
The programme offers a six-month intensive training schedule, combining two months of classroom-based theoretical instruction with four months of industry-based practical training. This integrated approach ensures that participants not only understand the technical concepts but also gain valuable experience in real-world construction environments, enhancing their readiness for the workforce.
A key highlight of the project is the opportunity for participants to earn the German DIHK–C Certification, an internationally recognized qualification that significantly improves employability in Ghana and abroad. Beyond technical skills, the programme also focuses on the development of essential soft skills, including communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving, which are critical for professional success.
The programme is inclusive, welcoming not only new graduates but also existing employees of construction companies who seek to advance their careers. Eligible applicants must be residents of the Ashanti Region and hold at least a Certificate II or higher qualification from an accredited TVET or engineering institution.
Applications are currently being accepted online via https://forms.gle/CBasMov7sMJGUTFC9, with a submission deadline of November 17, 2025. Selected candidates will be offered placement in construction companies or direct employment opportunities following the successful completion of the programme.
Through the “Female Talents in Construction Project”, the Ashanti Regional TVET Directorate and GIZ aim to create a strong pipeline of skilled female artisans capable of contributing meaningfully to Ghana’s infrastructural development while promoting gender equality within the technical workforce.
This initiative represents a decisive step towards transforming the construction sector in Ghana, inspiring young women to pursue technical careers, and ensuring that gender does not limit talent in shaping the nation’s future.
