In a significant gesture of intra-African solidarity, the Government of Egypt has donated 9,500 doses of hepatitis C medications, valued at approximately $80,000, to the Government of Ghana. The donation underscores the growing cooperation between the two nations and reinforces the importance of African countries supporting one another in addressing shared health challenges.

Presenting the donation, the Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, Wael Fathy Ahmed, emphasized that the contribution reflects a broader vision of continental collaboration in health. Ambassador Ahmed highlighted lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that Africa was among the last regions to receive vaccines. He stressed that African nations must work together to reduce dependence on external support and ensure timely access to essential medicines.

“The partnership between Egypt and Ghana goes beyond donations. There are opportunities for collaboration in pharmaceutical development and vaccine manufacturing here in Ghana,” Ambassador Ahmed noted, pointing to long-term strategies for strengthening Africa’s health systems.

Receiving the medications on behalf of the Ghanaian government, Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, expressed gratitude for the timely support. She described the donation as particularly valuable in an era of declining foreign aid and emphasized that support from a fellow African country underscores the critical importance of continental solidarity.

“This donation not only addresses immediate health needs but also reinforces the principle that Africa must support itself. Partnerships like this are key to advancing Africa’s health sovereignty and ensuring sustainable access to essential medicines and vaccines,” Prof. Danquah said.

As part of the ceremony, the Deputy Minister formally handed over the medications to the Ghana Health Service, which will oversee distribution and ensure the drugs reach patients across the country.

The donation represents another milestone in the growing bilateral relations between Ghana and Egypt, particularly in the health sector, as both countries work to build resilient healthcare systems capable of responding to current and future public health challenges.
