ECG Sub-Transmission Engineers Avert Major Revenue Loss Following Customer Downtime Threat

Management recognises such hardwork and dedication
When power reliability came under imminent threat and customer downtime loomed, a dedicated team of engineers from ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission acted swiftly to prevent a prolonged outage—averting a potentially costly disruption at Asawinso in the Western North Region and safeguarding significant revenue while sustaining economic activity in the area.

The engineers’ exceptional fortitude was demonstrated following a fault with a GRIDCo transformer (T2) at the Asawinso Bulk Supply Point (BSP) at about 12:13 a.m. on January 31, 2026. The fault resulted in power outages across several communities, including Awaso, Dwenase, Sefwi Wiawso, New Obuasi, Jejetreso, and surrounding areas.

Initial attempts to restore supply from the Joaboso BSP which is the closest proved unsuccessful due to poor power quality, rendering the intervention unsustainable and heightening the risk of prolonged customer downtime.

Given the critical nature of the situation, Ashanti Sub-Transmission engineers based in Kumasi were mobilised. The team set off at about 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, and arrived at Asawinso by 6:00 p.m. Work commenced immediately and continued through the night under challenging conditions, with the engineers using touch lights to dismantle and reroute high-voltage cables to onto an alternative transformer (T3). The painstaking exercise enabled the successful transfer of loads and restoring stability by around 8:00 a.m. the following morning.

Commending the team on behalf of the management of Ashanti Sub-Transmission and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as a whole, the General Manager for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, praised their commitment and sacrifice.
“Your selfless dedication to duty has not only brought relief to households and businesses, but it has also saved the company from substantial revenue loss and strengthened ECG’s image as a responsive and reliable service provider. Well done for your sacrifice in serving our cherished customers,” he said.

Asawinso BSP is one of the primary substations under the operational oversight of ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission in the Western North Region. The Sub-Transmission team that joined their regional counterparts to stabilise the system comprised *Joseph Opoku (Team Lead), Samuel Adongo, Prosper Boadi Kudzo, Isaac Sarfo, and Oscar Karikari.
