The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reaffirmed its commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education by hosting 108 students of Kotei RC Junior High School for an educational tour at its Boadi Yard in Kumasi.

The impactful initiative, held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, formed part of ECG’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme aimed at moving learning beyond the classroom and nurturing the next generation of engineers and energy professionals. The students were accompanied by nine teachers who also actively participated in the engagement.

During the visit, the students were taken through Ghana’s electricity value chain — from power generation, through transmission, to distribution. ECG engineers provided practical demonstrations using real-life equipment such as transformers, switchgears, low-voltage distribution panels and metering systems. Complex technical concepts were broken down into simple and understandable explanations to help the young learners appreciate how electricity is generated and delivered safely to homes and businesses.

The interactive sessions were led by Ing. Evans Edem Agra, Manager for Substations and Switchgears Maintenance; Ing. James Mensah Yevunya, Manager for Network Maintenance; and Ing. Christopher Anafo, Manager for Protection and Control. They emphasized the importance of discipline, safety consciousness, dedication and continuous learning as essential qualities for anyone aspiring to build a successful career in engineering.

A highlight of the tour was the active involvement of two Sub-Transmission female engineers, Florence Abiba Nabila and Ziblim Yakubu Mariama. Their mentorship and personal experiences particularly inspired the female students, encouraging them to view engineering as an achievable and rewarding career path. Their presence demonstrated ECG’s commitment to promoting gender inclusion within the engineering field.

Students and teachers expressed profound appreciation to ECG for the opportunity, describing the experience as “eye-opening” and “inspiring.” Many of the students indicated a renewed interest in pursuing careers in electrical and power engineering after witnessing firsthand how theory is applied in real-world operations.

The initiative underscores ECG’s broader mission of empowering Ghana’s future workforce by equipping young people not only with technical knowledge but also with the confidence and motivation to pursue careers in the energy sector. Through such hands-on engagements, the company continues to invest in developing the next generation of engineers who will drive Ghana’s sustainable development.
