ECG Engineers Prevent Major Power Outage, Safeguard Millions in Revenue at Asawinso

A dedicated team of engineers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully prevented a potentially catastrophic power outage at Asawinso in the Western North Region, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply to numerous communities and safeguarding substantial company revenue.

The crisis unfolded on January 31, 2026, at approximately 12:13 a.m., when a fault developed on a GRIDCo transformer (T2) at the Asawinso Bulk Supply Point (BSP). The fault caused widespread outages affecting communities including Awaso, Dwenase, Sefwi Wiawso, New Obuasi, Jejetreso, and surrounding areas, threatening both household and commercial activities.

Initial attempts to restore power from the nearby Joaboso BSP were unsuccessful due to poor power quality, raising the risk of prolonged customer downtime. Recognising the urgency of the situation, ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission engineers, based in Kumasi, were promptly mobilised. The team departed at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, and arrived at Asawinso by 6:00 p.m., immediately commencing work under challenging night-time conditions.

Equipped with only touch lights, the engineers meticulously dismantled and rerouted high-voltage cables onto an alternative transformer (T3). Their tireless and precise efforts enabled the successful transfer of loads and restored system stability by around 8:00 a.m. the following morning, averting a prolonged outage and significant financial losses.

Commending the team, General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, said:
“Your selfless dedication to duty has not only brought relief to households and businesses but has also saved the company from substantial revenue loss and strengthened ECG’s image as a responsive and reliable service provider. Well done for your sacrifice in serving our cherished customers.”

The engineers who played a pivotal role in stabilising the Asawinso BSP alongside regional counterparts include Joseph Opoku (Team Lead), Samuel Adongo, Prosper Boadi Kudzo, Isaac Sarfo, and Oscar Karikari. Asawinso BSP remains a critical facility under the operational oversight of ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission in the Western North Region, highlighting the importance of swift intervention in safeguarding power reliability and supporting regional economic activities.
