The Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), William Boateng, has attributed the recent rise in electricity bills across the country to increased household consumption of electrical appliances.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. Boateng explained that promotional sales and discounted offers on household devices have encouraged many Ghanaians to purchase energy-intensive appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and other electronic gadgets. This surge in appliance usage, he noted, has contributed significantly to the overall increase in power consumption nationwide.

Beyond rising consumption, Mr. Boateng also highlighted technical issues as a factor behind high electricity bills. Faulty house wiring, poor earthing systems, and other domestic electrical defects, he said, can lead to excessive power usage and inaccurate meter readings.

To mitigate these challenges, Mr. Boateng urged customers who notice unusual spikes in their electricity bills to report the matter promptly to their nearest ECG office. “Timely reporting allows the company to investigate, identify faults, and resolve issues efficiently, ensuring customers are billed accurately,” he emphasized.

He further encouraged households to regularly check their electrical systems and practice energy-saving habits to help manage consumption and reduce costs.

The ECG continues to call on all consumers to remain vigilant and proactive in monitoring their electricity usage, particularly as appliance ownership grows and demand for electricity rises.
