ECG Ashanti Safety Team Adopts Tough Measures Following 2025 Incident Report

The Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Team of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has unveiled a series of strict measures aimed at eliminating safety incidents in 2026, following a sobering review of the 2025 safety performance. The team, which brings together the four operational regions in the Ashanti enclave, has set a clear goal: zero safety incidents in the first quarter of 2026.

The resolutions emerged during the First Quarter 2026 Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Meeting, held at ECG’s Boadi Office. The session convened all Regional Engineers, their respective Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Representatives, the Sub-Transmission General Manager, and Technical Managers, emphasizing the regions’ collective commitment to making safety a top priority across all operations.

Providing a comprehensive overview of the national safety performance, Ing. Pearl Essel, Manager for Safety at ECG Head Office, presented the 2025 incident statistics virtually. According to her report, ECG recorded 44 electrical incidents nationwide, comprising 16 staff-related incidents and 28 involving non-staff. Alarmingly, 20 fatalities were recorded, including one staff fatality and 19 non-staff fatalities, resulting in compensation payments totaling GH₵1,269,765.

Zooming in on the Ashanti operational area, Ing. Essel reported that the combined regions recorded four non-staff fatalities, with zero staff fatalities. Specifically, Ashanti East accounted for two fatalities, Ashanti Sub-Transmission one, and Ashanti West one. All incidents involved contractors and members of the general public who came into contact with ECG infrastructure.

Following detailed regional safety presentations, identification of recurring safety gaps, and analysis of incident trends, participants unanimously resolved to tighten safety compliance and enforcement across all operational levels. The measures extend to ECG staff, third-party contractors, and the general public, reinforcing the company’s zero-tolerance stance on safety violations.

Among the key resolutions are intensified safety training for staff, the deployment of Regional Safety Officers to districts to educate personnel on best practices, and stricter supervision of contractors. Operational control has also been strengthened: all isolation requests must pass through Regional Engineers, and permits to work must be issued through the designated Controller.

The Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Team has reiterated that no task is so urgent and no assignment so important that it cannot be done safely. The meeting concluded with a firm commitment to embed safety as a shared culture, one driven by vigilance, accountability, and respect for human life.
