ECG Ashanti Regions Strengthen Safety Measures, Target Zero Incidents in 2026

In a decisive move to prevent accidents and enhance operational safety, the Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Team of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has rolled out comprehensive measures to achieve zero safety incidents in the first quarter of 2026. The team, which brings together all four operational regions within Ashanti, is calling for a unified commitment from staff, contractors, and the public to uphold the highest safety standards.

The measures were announced at the First Quarter 2026 Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Meeting, held at ECG’s Boadi Office. The meeting brought together Regional Engineers, Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Representatives, Technical Managers, and the Sub-Transmission General Manager, highlighting a shared determination to place safety at the center of all operational activities.

Providing a critical overview of ECG’s national safety performance, Ing. Pearl Essel, Manager for Safety at Head Office, joined the meeting virtually. She revealed that ECG recorded 44 electrical incidents nationwide in 2025, comprising 16 staff-related incidents and 28 involving non-staff. Tragically, 20 fatalities occurred, including one staff member and nineteen non-staff individuals, resulting in total compensation payments of GH₵1,269,765.

Focusing on the Ashanti operational area, Ing. Essel reported that the combined regions recorded four non-staff fatalities, with zero staff fatalities. Specifically, Ashanti East recorded two fatalities, Ashanti Sub-Transmission one, and Ashanti West one. All incidents involved contractor personnel and members of the general public interacting with ECG infrastructure.

Following detailed presentations, the identification of recurring safety gaps, and an analysis of incident trends, participants unanimously resolved to strengthen safety compliance and enforcement across all levels of operation. Measures include intensified safety training for staff, the deployment of Regional Safety Officers to districts, and enhanced supervision and training for contractors. Operational control has also been reinforced, with all isolation requests routed through Regional Engineers and permits to work issued strictly by the designated Controller.

The Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Team concluded that no task is too urgent, and no assignment too important, to be executed unsafely. Participants emphasized that safety must transcend compliance to become a shared culture rooted in vigilance, accountability, and care for human life.
