“Early Screening Saves Lives” — Senior Midwife Urges Women to Prevent Cervical Cancer

A Senior Midwife at the Mansa Memorial Hospital at Akyewkrom in the Ejisu Municipal of the Ashanti Region, Madam Akua Nyarko Antwi, has strongly urged women to undergo regular cervical cancer screening and routine medical check-ups as a critical step towards preventing the disease.

According to her, cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among women, yet it is largely preventable when detected early. She explained that many women lose their lives unnecessarily due to late diagnosis, stressing that early screening allows for timely treatment and significantly improves survival rates.

Madam Akua Nyarko Antwi made these remarks during a free cervical cancer screening exercise organised by the Mansa Memorial Hospital in collaboration with the Prince Asamany Foundation at Akyewkrom. The initiative aimed at creating awareness and encouraging women to take proactive steps in protecting their health.
She further advised women not to wait until symptoms appear before seeking medical attention, noting that cervical cancer often shows no early signs. She therefore encouraged all women, particularly those of reproductive age, to make screening a regular part of their healthcare routine.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the Prince Asamany Foundation, Mr. Prince Asamany, described the foundation as a community-focused humanitarian organisation committed to improving lives through health, education and social support. He stated that the foundation places strong emphasis on protecting families, empowering women and saving lives.

Mr. Asamany explained that the goal of the free screening exercise was to remove fear, break misconceptions surrounding cervical cancer and make early screening accessible to women in the community. He stressed that access to basic healthcare and timely information should be available to everyone, regardless of background or financial status.

On his part, the Administrator of the Mansa Memorial Hospital, Mr. Emmanuel Oti Agyekum, reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to women’s health and preventive care. He disclosed that the facility organises free health screening exercises for women on the last day of every month.

Mr. Agyekum added that the hospital regularly engages qualified health professionals with expertise in cervical cancer screening to ensure accurate diagnosis and quality care. He encouraged women in Akyewkrom and surrounding communities to take advantage of the initiative and prioritise their health.
