There is escalating tension at Akyem Awenare in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern region ahead of the Judgement by the Judicial Committee of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council on the chieftaincy dispute in the community.
The judicial committee is expected to make a determination on the rightful occupant of the Awenare stool which has been in dispute between two factions.
Speaking during a press conference at Akyem Awenare on Tuesday, angry residents clad in red armbands and dresses led by Asafo Akye of Akyem Awenare, Mr Kwaku Agyarko explained that the residents are living in fear due to the escalating tension fueling possible clashes.
He said school children are not able to attend schools whilst farmers sit home out of fear of being caught up in violent clashes.
Mr Kwaku Agyarko, therefore, appealed to Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, and the Regional House of Chiefs to ensure that fairness prevails and the stool is given to the faction that deserves it in order to restore peace in the community.
The youth queen-mother of Awenare, Madam Susana Afrifa, said ahead of the judgement today 14th December 2022, the Asene faction is going around declaring themselves as winners fueling confusion in the community.
Meanwhile, the Unit Committee Secretary of Akyem Awenare, Mr Dacosta Kwasi Fianko revealed that because some chiefs in the Akyem Abuakwa Judicial Committee have an interest in the case they intend to divert the stool to an undeserved faction hence he cautioned that if such a move succeeds, peace cannot be guaranteed.
The Ghana Police service has however intensified patrols in the community to maintain peace and order.
