The Presby Basic School at Huhunya, a farming community in the Yilo Krobo Municipality near Boti falls in the Eastern Region, has been using a deathtrap school building facility that posses danger to both teachers and pupils of the school over the past years.
The basic school which serves the whole community and neighbouring communities, has been left to rot without any proper maintenance.
The Dadematse of the area, Nene lsaac Tetteh
who spoke to David Ayertey Nenebi, stated that “the pupils’ lives are in danger studying under the deathtrap structure”.
The Assembly Member for Huhunya, Hon Elder Joseph Tetteh sàid “he fears for the safety of the children especially whenever it’s about to rain.”
According to him, “the building has cracks in it, which can easily be broken down by a heavy rain and wind”.
The headmistress of the school said “though she reported the case to the Assembly Member and PTA chairman for the area, but the school is yet to receive any feedback.
The Headteacher, the Assembly member and the Dademaste are therefore appealing to non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to help salvage the facility.
The building was constructed over hundred years ago (100) under the former British administration and it is the only government basic school serving 20 communites within the area.
