Drobonso Chief Raises Alarm Over Escalating Highway Attacks, Demands Urgent Security Reinforcement
The Chief of Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region, Nana Dwamena Dankwa Dwubisaw, has made an urgent appeal for enhanced security measures following a surge in armed robbery attacks on farmers, traders, and travellers in the area.

Addressing residents and dignitaries during the district’s 41st Farmers’ Day celebration, Nana Dwubisaw expressed deep worry over what he described as a growing threat to lives and livelihoods, particularly along the Kumawu–Drobonso road. He noted that the stretch has become one of the most dangerous routes in the region, with criminals frequently ambushing passengers and robbing them of money, produce, mobile phones, and other valuables.

According to the chief, the heightened insecurity poses a serious threat to the district’s economic stability. He warned that if the situation is not addressed urgently, the constant fear of travelling could lead to a decline in market activities, especially as most farmers rely on the highway to transport their goods to the Drobonso market.

Nana Dwubisaw stated firmly that while he respects national security structures, he cannot remain silent while the lives of his people are endangered. He hinted that the traditional authorities may be compelled to take self-defense measures if the police fail to guarantee the safety of residents.

“If the police cannot protect us, we will have no choice but to defend ourselves,” he cautioned, stressing that community safety remains his top priority.

He therefore called on government to consider establishing military camps along the Kumawu–Drobonso road and other strategic points within the Sekyere Afram Plains to deter the criminals who have been operating with increasing boldness. According to him, the presence of a military base or regular military patrols would drastically reduce the activities of armed gangs terrorizing travellers.

In response, the Kumawu District Police Commander, DSP James Osei, assured the chief and the entire community that the police are committed to intensifying patrols on the affected route. He reaffirmed the command’s dedication to restoring safety and urged residents to support the police with credible information that could aid in combating the robbery menace.

Farmers, traders, and residents in Drobonso remain hopeful that stronger security interventions will be implemented soon to protect their lives, businesses, and the economic future of the Sekyere Afram Plains District.
