Driving Safety First: MTN Ghana and MTTD Train Staff to Reduce Road Accidents

MTN Ghana, in partnership with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, has rolled out its 2025 nationwide road safety training program, beginning with drivers and staff in the Northern Business District (NBD). The maiden session took place on Monday at the MTN office in Nhyiaeso, Kumasi.
This year’s training introduces a renewed strategic collaboration with the MTTD aimed at equipping corporate drivers and staff with practical road safety skills and strengthening compliance with Ghana’s traffic regulations. The initiative comes at a time when the country continues to record rising road accident cases, underscoring the need for stronger, more structured safety interventions.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director for Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, led the facilitation. He described the increasing rate of preventable road crashes as deeply troubling and urged coordinated efforts to safeguard lives.

Speaking to journalists at the event, Chief Superintendent Obeng revealed that between January and October 2025, Ghana recorded 11,000 road crashes, which resulted in more than 2,400 deaths and 12,000 injuries. “These are not just figures; they represent parents, children, workers, and breadwinners whose lives have been cut short or permanently altered. This collaboration with MTN Ghana is timely and essential in shaping safer driving behavior among corporate drivers,” he stressed.

Training Focus Areas
The road safety training—which MTN Ghana organizes twice annually as part of its occupational health and safety policy—covered key modules, including:
Defensive driving techniques
Hazard identification and risk assessment
Safe driving in varying weather and traffic conditions
Vehicle inspection and maintenance
Adherence to Ghana’s traffic laws such as speed limits, seatbelt use, and anti-distraction provisions

MTN Ghana has built a reputable track record in road safety excellence, with its corporate drivers winning national awards for outstanding conduct. The company maintains a strict enforcement regime to ensure full compliance with both internal safety policies and national road traffic regulations.
MTN’s Commitment to Safety
Road safety training forms a critical component of MTN’s mandatory induction for new employees and is refreshed annually for all staff. According to MTN, the objective is to protect employees, passengers, and the general public while supporting national efforts to reduce accidents.

Reaffirming the company’s commitment, an MTN spokesperson noted, “Our drivers are an integral part of our operations. Their safety—and that of other road users—is non-negotiable. This training provides the practical skills and discipline required to operate responsibly and strengthens our commitment to cultivating a safe driving culture across Ghana.”

With the 2025 program officially underway, MTN Ghana and the MTTD are seeking to deepen corporate participation in nationwide road safety efforts, reduce accident risks, and promote responsible road use through proactive training and compliance-driven practices.
