Dr. Patrick Essien Receives Prestigious NUGS Youth Leadership Citation for Commitment to National Development
Dr. Patrick Essien, Founder and President of Molex Foundation Africa, has received a prestigious Youth Leadership Citation from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in recognition of his exceptional commitment to youth leadership development, mentorship, and national development.

The honour was conferred at the 58th NUGS Handing-Over, Swearing-In, and Education Award Ceremony, a high-profile national event that celebrates excellence, service, and visionary leadership within Ghana’s student movement. The recognition highlights Dr. Essien’s enduring dedication to empowering young people with the values, skills, and confidence required for responsible leadership and national service.
Widely regarded as a passionate advocate for youth empowerment, gender inclusion, and skills-based education, Dr. Essien has consistently used his expertise to advance opportunities for young people across the country. As a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) expert, environmental scientist, and public servant, he has combined policy insight with practical interventions that directly impact lives.
Through Molex Foundation Africa, Dr. Essien has played a leading role in addressing gender disparities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. His flagship initiative, SHEROES in STEM, has become a nationally recognised platform dedicated to inspiring and equipping young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, and innovation.
The initiative has empowered hundreds of young women by boosting their confidence, providing access to STEM education and hands-on skills, and offering mentorship from industry and academic leaders. These efforts have not only transformed individual lives but have also contributed to Ghana’s broader human capital development and sustainable growth agenda.
At the ceremony, the NUGS citation commended Dr. Essien for his sacrifice, dedication, and unwavering mentorship of young people in leadership and governance. Dr. Essien currently serves as Deputy Director for Mining at the Environmental Protection Authority, where he continues to apply technical expertise and ethical leadership in regulating Ghana’s mining sector while maintaining a strong focus on environmental sustainability and youth inclusion.
This latest honour adds to a growing list of national recognitions earned by Dr. Essien. Recently, he received an Honorary Recognition for STEM and Innovation at the Ghana Tech Awards for his outstanding contribution to STEM education, innovation, and youth empowerment.
