Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Launches Manhyia South Shoemaking Hub, Graduates 35 Skilled Artisans

In a major step toward youth empowerment and vocational development, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Minister for Education and current Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, has launched the Make Ghana Proud Shoemakers Association at a vibrant ceremony held in Ashtown, Kumasi.

The event also marked the graduation of 35 artisans who successfully completed technical training in shoemaking under the Make Ghana Proud initiative — a project founded by Dr. Opoku Prempeh to promote local craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, and self-sufficiency.

Present at the ceremony were Hon. Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the current MP for Manhyia South, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders. Certificates were presented to the graduating artisans as a recognition of their dedication and hard work.

Speaking at the event, which was held at the Christ Apostolic Church in Ashtown, Dr. Opoku Prempeh — affectionately known as Napo — highlighted the crucial role of vocational training in driving national progress. “We must value the hands that build as much as the minds that think,” he said. “Through skills training, we are empowering our youth to become job creators, not just job seekers. Manhyia South will soon be a shining example of what skilled craftsmanship can achieve for our nation.”

The Make Ghana Proud Shoemaking Hub aims to position Manhyia South as the leading center for quality shoemaking in Ghana over the next decade, creating job opportunities and promoting economic independence within the constituency.

Coordinator of the project, Lawyer Mina Antwi Yeboah, praised Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s vision and commitment to grassroots development. “This project is not just about today; it is about securing a future where Manhyia South becomes synonymous with quality shoemaking. We are grateful for our MP’s foresight and support,” she said.

Hon. Lawyer Agyei Baffour Awuah, current MP for the area, also pledged to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor to ensure the sustainability of the initiative. “This project is expected to have a positive impact on our people — helping them acquire skills, secure jobs, and improve their lives. I am committed to supporting its success,” he assured.

Chairman of the occasion, Nana Appau Wiafe Ababio Sawoansan, Chief of Kwabre Heman, urged the graduates to take their training seriously and maintain high standards in their craft — particularly in making traditional Kyawkyaw sandals. He also encouraged the youth to embrace vocational skills and stay away from drug abuse.

Some of the newly graduated artisans expressed their gratitude for the life-changing opportunity. “We are thankful for the training and encouragement. We are ready to make Manhyia South proud with the skills we’ve gained,” a beneficiary shared.

The launch of the shoemaking hub and the successful graduation of the first cohort signal a milestone in the Make Ghana Proud journey — a testament to the power of visionary leadership and community-driven development.
