Divine Nana Owusu Mining Company Set to Reclaim 300 Acres, Plant Coconut Seedlings at Abandoned Mining Site in Konongo

The Divine Nana Owusu Mining Company has unveiled plans to reclaim a 300-acre mining site at Konongo that has been ravaged by illegal mining activities. During a press briefing during the tour to the site , the Director of the company, Mr. Divine Nana Owusu, expressed serious concerns about the negative impact of illegal “dig and wash” galamsey operations on the site. He noted that these unregulated activities have not only caused environmental damage but also disrupted the company’s lawful mining operations.

Mr. Owusu explained that the illegal miners have dug up large portions of land, leaving behind abandoned pits that pose a danger to both the community and the environment. He emphasized the company’s commitment to reclaiming the area, starting with the restoration of the land and the planting of coconut seedlings.

“We are determined to restore the land and convert it into a productive space, but these illegal miners are making it very difficult for us. Their reckless digging and washing methods have left the land in a terrible state,” Mr. Owusu said.

As part of the reclamation effort, the company plans to fill in the abandoned pits, improve the soil quality, and begin a reforestation program with coconut seedlings to promote agricultural productivity.

Mr. Owusu also called on the local community to assist in protecting the land from further destruction by the galamseyers. He stressed the importance of community involvement in preserving the environment, noting that their cooperation would help secure the area for future generations.

In addition to community support, Mr. Owusu made a strong appeal to security agencies, requesting their help to prevent further encroachment by illegal miners. Without the necessary security measures, he fears that the company’s reclamation efforts will be compromised.

“We are asking for stronger support from the security agencies to ensure that these illegal miners do not return to destroy the land again. It’s critical that we protect the site for the long-term benefit of everyone,” he said.

The company’s environmental reclamation initiative aligns with the government’s larger campaign against illegal mining, known as galamsey, and its efforts to promote sustainable mining practices in Ghana. Divine Nana Owusu Mining Company has built a reputation for responsible mining, and this reclamation project is a key part of its commitment to restoring mined land and enhancing the surrounding ecosystem.

Mr. Owusu also urged local authorities, environmental organizations, and traditional leaders to join in the fight against illegal mining, stating that collaborative efforts would be essential in tackling the issue at its roots.

As the company moves forward with the reclamation of the 300-acre site, it remains hopeful that with community and security agency support, the area will be fully restored and protected from future illegal mining activities.
