Datano Residents Join Assembly to Clear Filth and Promote Hygiene

Residents of Datano, a key commercial centre in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region, came out in full force on Tuesday morning to participate in a massive clean-up exercise led by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Benjamin Marfo, in line with the President’s directive on National Sanitation Day.

The exercise, organized by the Amansie South District Assembly, formed part of a broader national effort to tackle poor sanitation and promote environmental hygiene across Ghana. Hon. Marfo was accompanied by the District Co-ordinating Director and staff of the Assembly, who worked hand-in-hand with the local community to clean various parts of the town.

Market squares, streets, gutters, and refuse collection points were the main focus of the exercise. The team cleared choked drains, swept streets, and removed heaps of refuse that had accumulated in the area over time. The clean-up, which started in the early hours of the morning, drew widespread community involvement and support.

Hon. Kwame Amponsah, the Assembly Member for the Datano Electoral Area and also the Presiding Member of the District Assembly, played a crucial role in mobilizing community members to participate. He lauded the residents for responding positively to the call and showing a strong communal spirit.

“We can only achieve a clean and healthy environment if we all play our part. I am particularly impressed by the unity and commitment shown by my people this morning. Datano has once again proven that together, we can make a difference,” Hon. Amponsah stated.

District Chief Executive Hon. Benjamin Marfo, in a brief address after the exercise, emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to sanitation and environmental protection. He called on residents to make sanitation a daily habit and not just a periodic activity.

“Sanitation is a shared responsibility. This initiative aligns with the President’s vision of ensuring a clean Ghana. As a District, we will continue to provide leadership and support towards making our communities healthier and more liveable,” the DCE said.

He further disclosed that the Assembly will roll out periodic sanitation campaigns and intensify public education, especially in schools and marketplaces, to encourage proper waste management and hygiene practices.

The DCE also urged residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste and take advantage of waste collection services provided by the Assembly.

Some residents who spoke to the media praised the District Assembly for its leadership and pledged to maintain cleanliness in the town. They also appealed for more waste bins and regular refuse collection services to sustain the gains of the clean-up exercise.

Tuesday’s clean-up marks a renewed effort by the Amansie South District Assembly to deepen community participation in sanitation issues and contribute to the broader national vision of a cleaner Ghana.
