The Kuntenase Traditional Council has been shaken by major leadership changes following the destoolment of the Odikro of Dwenase, Nana Owusu Kutri Ampem, by the Paramount Chief, Barima Amankwah Adunan Ababio II.
The decision, announced during a well-attended sitting at the Kuntenase Palace, stems from a series of grave allegations including land-related fraud, abuse of traditional authority, and violations of long-established cultural norms. Among the charges, the most startling was Nana Owusu Kutri Ampem’s imposition of a false ban on goat rearing in Dwenase — a decree he allegedly used to confiscate and slaughter 32 goats belonging to unsuspecting residents for personal gain.
Barima Amankwah Adunan Ababio II, deeply concerned about the Odikro’s misconduct, declared the destoolment effective immediately. In a move signaling a broader clean-up within the traditional council, the Omanhene also announced the indefinite suspension of two sub-chiefs—the Benkumhene and the Ntotoehene—for aiding or failing to prevent the abuses.
Delivering a statement to the press on behalf of the Omanhene, Kyeame Nana Gyamfi Kumanin emphasized the paramountcy’s zero-tolerance approach to misconduct:“The stool is sacred. It is not a tool for personal enrichment or oppression. This palace will continue to stand for truth, accountability, and the preservation of our cherished customs.”
The Oyoko Royal Family of Kuntenase-Dwenase, to which the former Odikro belongs, has endorsed the Omanhene’s decision. Speaking on behalf of the family, elder Kwabena Ameyaw said the move was in the best interest of the community.
“We welcome this action. It restores dignity to our royal house and assures the people that leadership must be earned through service, not manipulation,” Mr. Ameyaw remarked.
Residents of Dwenase have largely applauded the bold step, viewing it as an opportunity to rebuild trust between traditional authorities and the people they serve.
The Kuntenase Traditional Council has indicated that processes will soon be initiated to nominate a new Odikro, signaling a fresh beginning for Dwenase.
