The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Communication Directorate strongly condemns the disgraceful and violent disruption of the Ashanti Region’s Council of State elections today. This act of electoral thuggery, allegedly carried out by individuals aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is yet another example of the NDC’s well-documented pattern of using intimidation, chaos, and lawlessness to manipulate elections.
It is evident that the NDC and its government have made a habit of deploying vigilantes to disrupt democratic processes. We witnessed this during the 2024 General Elections, where violence erupted at multiple collation centers across the country. NDC elements attempted to illegally control the voting process, tampered with election materials, and nearly compromised the credibility of the polls. Today, we see the same tactics at play once again, this time at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), a designated security zone, where known thugs stormed the election center, destroyed ballots, and attacked journalists.
A Stain on the Integrity of the Council of State
The Council of State election should be conducted in an atmosphere of peace, decorum, and sanity, reflecting the high esteem in which the institution is held. If such an important and revered leadership selection process is now being marred by hooliganism and ballot destruction, all well-meaning Ghanaians must be deeply concerned. This disgraceful act tarnishes the credibility of the institution and diminishes public confidence in our democratic structures.
The NDC, both as a party and as a government, has failed to protect the sanctity of our democratic institutions. Their tolerance of hooliganism is a dangerous precedent that threatens the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.
President Mahama and Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashantis Demand Law and Order!
President Mahama and Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene have a duty to protect the peace and security of this nation, not to preside over a system where violent elements dictate the outcome of democratic processes. If this government continues to entertain and tolerate election thugs, it will send a dangerous signal that Ghana is no longer governed by the rule of law but by political gangsters.
Enough is Enough: Ashanti Region Must Be Safe for All
The NPP in the Ashanti Region will not sit back and allow the NDC to plunge this region into electoral chaos. We are putting it on record that any future attempts to use violence and confusion as a political tool will be met with strong resistance from peace-loving Ghanaians who are ready to defend democracy at all costs. The Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, must take urgent action to prevent these reckless actions from spiraling out of control.
We call on the Ashanti Regional Police Commander to immediately investigate this disgraceful attack and bring the perpetrators to justice. No political party should feel emboldened to destroy ballots, attack journalists, or disrupt democratic processes without facing the full force of the law.
Ghana is bigger than any political party. The peace and security of this nation must be non-negotiable.
Signed:
Paul Kwabena Yandoh
Ashanti Regional Director of Communication, NPP
