Petty traders from the City Market, particularly table-top sellers, have extended a heartfelt donation to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in honor of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III. The gesture, according to the traders, was their way of paying tribute to a woman they considered a true mother figure, whose compassion and guidance deeply impacted their lives.

Speaking during the presentation, the President of the traders’ group, Madam Sandra Osei Bonsu, recounted how the late Queen Mother stood by them during some of their most difficult times, including the collapse of the market building. She described Nana Konadu Yiadom III as a beacon of encouragement who offered comfort and direction whenever they were in distress.

“Upon hearing of her passing, we felt compelled to contribute in her honor, as a way of showing gratitude for the love and advice she always extended to us,” Madam Sandra said.

She also seized the opportunity to appeal to the government to speed up efforts to complete the Krofrom Market and to give urgent attention to the reconstruction of the Kumasi Central Market, which remains critical for traders and the larger population. She further advised the youth to comport themselves respectfully and dress decently when attending the Queen Mother’s funeral rites, to uphold the dignity of Asante traditions.

The Vice President of the traders’ association, Madam Mary, also emphasized the need for young people, particularly women, to participate actively in the funeral ceremonies to learn and appreciate the richness of Asante culture. She encouraged them to embrace modesty and humility as a sign of respect for the occasion.

Touching on the challenges traders face, Madam Mary lamented that the collapse of the Central Market had left many sellers exposed to harsh weather conditions, resulting in eye problems and other health concerns. She stressed that rebuilding the market would not only ease their struggles but also create a cleaner, healthier, and more conducive environment for business activities.

“Reconstructing the market will not only improve our working conditions but also enhance sanitation, which will benefit the entire community,” she noted.

The donation by the City Market petty traders reflects the deep sense of gratitude and reverence they hold for the late Queen Mother. Her legacy of compassion and leadership, they said, will remain a lasting source of inspiration for both traders and the wider Asante community.
