Chaos Looms in Antoa as Royals Reject New Chief’s Appointment.

Antoa, a town in the Ashanti Region, is witnessing rising tensions following the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s decision to appoint Nana Kofi Ofori as the new chief of Antoa.

The announcement, made on 10th February 2025 during an Asanteman Council sitting, has been met with mixed reactions, with some members of the Aduana Royal Family strongly opposing the decision.

Nana Kofi Ofori, who has been acting as the caretaker chief since the destoolment of 96-year-old Nana Kwame Owusu Agyemang I in May 2023, was recommended by the Elders of the Antoa Stool.

However, some royals and concerned citizens argue that he is not the right candidate, citing allegations of misconduct, including the sale of lands and the use of intimidation tactics.

According to Mr. Mandella Donkor, one of the concerned royals, Nana Kofi Ofori has been using force to silence those who challenge his legitimacy.

“Just a few days ago, some macho men beat one of the royals to the pulp at the palace in his presence and in the presence of the police. He [Nana Kofi Ofori] did not utter a word or try to stop them.

“The old lady is now hospitalized. I am pleading with him to put his men in order because traditionally, this is wrong,” he lamented.

Maame Attah and Osei Yaw also expressed their disapproval, stressing that Nana Kofi Ofori’s alleged illegal sale of lands disqualifies him from ascending the throne.

“The previous chief was destooled for selling multiple lands, yet the incoming chief, even as a caretaker, has done worse. He does not qualify to lead because the majority of the people do not support him,” Osei Yaw stated.

Another member of the royal family, Maame Ama Ntome, voiced her frustration over the lack of consultation in the selection process.

“No member of the family was consulted on his candidacy, which is traditionally wrong. He has unlawfully sold most of our lands, and now we don’t even have land to farm. This has brought hunger to us. If nothing is done about this, there will be chaos in the town,” she warned.

As tensions escalate, many residents and members of the Aduana Royal Family are calling on the Asantehene to reconsider his decision to avoid potential unrest in the community.
