CAF Forces Coach Akwasi Appiah to Resign from Ghana Football Association Executive Council

In a surprising turn of events, Coach Akwasi Appiah has been forced to resign from his position on the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following a directive from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The decision comes in the wake of growing concerns regarding conflicts of interest involving individuals holding dual roles within football governance and active coaching.

Coach Akwesi Appiah, a former head coach of the Ghana national team, the Black Stars, was elected to the GFA Executive Council in 2023. However, CAF has raised concerns about his continued involvement in the council while also actively pursuing a coaching career. This, according to CAF’s regulations, could pose a conflict of interest, as decisions made at the executive level could directly or indirectly influence his coaching prospects or affiliations.

The directive from CAF is part of a broader effort by the continental football body to ensure transparency and fairness in African football governance. By limiting the roles that active coaches can play in football administration, CAF aims to prevent any potential conflicts that could affect the integrity of the sport.

Coach Akwasi  Appiah, who recently took up the position as head coach of the Sudanese national football team, has complied with CAF’s instructions, tendering his resignation from the GFA Executive Council. In his resignation letter, Appiah expressed gratitude to the football community and his fellow council members for the opportunity to serve but acknowledged the importance of adhering to CAF’s guidelines.

“It has been an honour to serve on the Executive Council of the GFA, and I remain committed to the development of football in Ghana. However, I respect CAF’s directive and believe it is in the best interest of our sport for me to step down,” Appiah stated.

His resignation leaves a vacancy on the GFA Executive Council, and the association is expected to begin the process of selecting a replacement. The GFA, in a statement, thanked Coach Akwasi Appiah for his contributions during his time on the council and wished him well in his future endeavours, both as a coach and a football administrator.

This development has sparked conversations within Ghana’s football community, with some expressing concern over the loss of a prominent figure like Akwasi Appiah from the GFA’s leadership. Others, however, support CAF’s stance, emphasizing the need for clear boundaries between football administration and coaching to maintain fairness and credibility within the sport.

As Ghana prepares for upcoming international competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Appiah’s departure from the GFA Executive Council marks a significant change in the country’s football administration landscape. Nonetheless, his resignation highlights the increasing emphasis on transparency and accountability in African football governance under CAF’s watch.
