Bosomefreho District Cracks Down on Illegal Mining, DCE Gives One-Week Ultimatum

The Bosomefreho District Assembly has intensified efforts to curb illegal mining activities in the district, announcing a decisive crackdown aimed at promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices.

In a recent meeting with small-scale miners operating within the district, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Charles Appiah Kubi, directed all miners to submit their operational licences to the assembly for verification within a one-week timeframe. The directive is part of a broader initiative to safeguard the district’s forests, water bodies, and roadside areas from the destructive impact of unregulated mining.

Hon. Charles Appiah Kubi stressed that the assembly, through its dedicated taskforce, would strictly enforce regulations prohibiting mining in ecologically sensitive areas. He warned that individuals or groups who continue to engage in illegal mining activities would face the full rigour of the law. “We will not tolerate mining that destroys our forests, pollutes our rivers, or endangers public safety along our roads,” he said.

The DCE further emphasized the importance of responsible mining, noting that sustainable practices not only protect the environment but also ensure the long-term viability of mining as a source of livelihood for the community.

In response to the assembly’s initiative, members of the Small-Scale Miners Association within the district pledged their full cooperation. They committed to submitting their licences and adhering strictly to guidelines that promote environmentally friendly and lawful mining operations.

The Bosomefreho District Assembly’s proactive stance reflects a growing determination by local authorities in Ghana to regulate small-scale mining, protect natural resources, and prevent environmental degradation. Residents and stakeholders alike have welcomed the measures, viewing them as essential for fostering sustainable development and preserving the district’s ecological integrity.

With the one-week ultimatum in effect, the assembly’s enforcement measures are expected to set a precedent for responsible mining practices and serve as a deterrent against illegal operations in Bosomefreho.
