Bekwai GPRTU Chairman Pleads with President, Otumfuo Over Alleged Forceful Land Seizure by Municipal Assembly

The Chairman of the Bekwai branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr. Charles Osei Agyemang, has made a passionate appeal to President  John Dramani Mahama and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, following the alleged forceful retrieval of land he legally acquired in 2012. The land, which he developed into a bus terminal, has reportedly been taken over by the Bekwai Municipal Assembly, resulting in the destruction of billions of cedis’ worth of investments.

Mr. Agyemang revealed that the parcel of government land was initially granted to him to establish a bus terminal to alleviate congestion at the town’s limited lorry station. He claimed to have poured substantial personal funds into the project to create a modern and functional transport facility for the municipality.

“The Municipal Assembly has used autocratic and dubious means to seize the land from me, citing the construction of a party office as justification. This completely undermines my legal ownership and the purpose for which the land was granted,” Mr. Agyemang lamented.

He appealed to the highest authorities in the land, including the Chief of Staff, the Bekwai Manhene, and other opinion leaders, to intervene and ensure justice is served. Mr. Agyemang warned that failure to resolve the matter may compel him to take “alternative measures” to protect his rights and investments.

The alleged incident has sparked concern among residents and transport operators who rely on the bus terminal for their daily operations. Many have called for a transparent review of the case to safeguard property rights and prevent political interference in land allocations.

Attempts to reach the Bekwai Municipal Assembly and NDC representatives for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

The case underscores the critical need for clear legal frameworks and adherence to due process in land management, especially where public allocations intersect with private investment in Ghana.
