Former Vice President and leading New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is set to embark on a three-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region from September 10 to 12, 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen his support base and energize party faithful ahead of the NPP’s flagbearer primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The Ashanti Region, regarded as the heartbeat of the NPP and a decisive battleground for internal contests, is expected to play a key role in shaping the outcome of the upcoming leadership race. Dr. Bawumia’s decision to kick-start a high-profile regional campaign there signals his determination to consolidate his influence in the party’s traditional stronghold.

The campaign itinerary will see him traverse strategic operational zones across the region, including Adansi, Amansie, Asante Akim, Sekyere-Kumawu, Afigya Kwabre, Nsuta-Mampong, Ahafo, Atwima, and the Kumasi metropolitan areas. The tour will begin on Wednesday with visits to Adansi, Amansie, and Asante Akim. On Thursday, he will move through Sekyere Effiduase-Kumawu, Nsuta-Mampong, and Afigya Kwabre before concluding on Friday with engagements in Ahafo, Atwima, and Kumasi.

Throughout the tour, Dr. Bawumia is expected to meet with regional and constituency executives, Members of Parliament, former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, former Chief Executive Officers, the Regional Council of Elders, and other past executives. He will officially declare his intention to contest the flagbearer position and share his vision for the NPP and Ghana’s future.

The campaign team has emphasized that his message will focus heavily on unity, reconciliation, and development-oriented leadership, themes that resonate with party members seeking to consolidate strength ahead of the 2026 general elections. This first round of engagements is seen as a prelude to a more comprehensive grassroots drive that will bring him closer to Electoral Area Coordinators, polling station executives, and local organizers to ensure a stronger presence in all constituencies.

Analysts say that winning the Ashanti Region will be crucial for any serious contender, given its significance as the largest voting bloc in the NPP. The region’s delegates, numbering in the tens of thousands, are expected to hold massive sway over the outcome of the primaries. For Dr. Bawumia, securing widespread endorsement from Ashanti’s political base could prove to be a decisive factor in his bid to lead the party into the next general election.

The NPP’s upcoming flagbearer contest is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent history, with several prominent figures eyeing the leadership slot to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Having served as Vice President from 2017 to 2025, Dr. Bawumia is considered one of the frontrunners. His campaign emphasizes a technology-driven and inclusive approach to leadership, building on the NPP’s achievements while charting a new path for national development.

Party insiders believe this Ashanti Region campaign will set the tone for a heated race in the months ahead. As he engages delegates and party executives across the region, attention will be fixed on how effectively he can rally support, solidify his position, and project himself as the candidate capable of uniting the party and winning the 2026 elections.
