Bawa’s Struggle Against Homophobia in Kumasi

In November 2023, the tranquil community of Tafo Pankron in Kumasi, Ghana, witnessed a disturbing incident that would shake the foundations of one man’s life. Bawa Mohammed Amin, a 41-year-old resident, found himself at the center of a storm of accusations, facing hostility and threats from his own community due to allegations of engaging in homosexuality.
Bawa, a devout Muslim who has lived his entire life adhering to his religious beliefs, suddenly became the target of discrimination and violence. Accused of a taboo that has long been stigmatized in Ghana, he was forcibly chased out of his residence, and angry youth in the community went so far as to issue death threats if he dared to return home.
Quoting Bawa Mohammed Amin on the harrowing experience, he expressed, “I never imagined my life taking such a drastic turn. I have always been a devout Muslim, and these accusations are tearing apart the fabric of my existence. I now face the agonizing decision of leaving the community I’ve called home for over four decades.”
The incident sheds light on the pervasive homophobia that persists in some communities, fueled by unfounded accusations and deeply ingrained prejudices. Bawa’s case exposes the vulnerability of individuals who become targets of discrimination based on their perceived sexual orientation.
As Bawa contemplates leaving the community of his birth to escape the threats and hostility, it raises questions about the societal dynamics that force individuals to choose between their identity and safety.
The situation is further complicated by the ongoing parliamentary discussions surrounding a bill seeking to criminalize homosexuality in Ghana. This proposed legislation, if enacted, could intensify the challenges faced by individuals like Bawa, subjecting them to legal repercussions in addition to the social ostracization they already endure.
Local youth groups, reflecting the prevailing sentiments in the community, expressed their views on the matter. A representative stated, “Our community has certain values, and anyone seen as going against them will face consequences. We are standing up for what we believe is right.”
The clash between conservative beliefs, legal frameworks, and the fundamental rights of individuals underscores the complex landscape that exists for those grappling with their sexual identity in certain parts of the world. Bawa’s story serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for societal dialogue, education, and empathy to foster acceptance and understanding of diverse identities within communities.
Over the last two years, several individuals in Kumasi have faced accusations of homosexuality. Incidents have ranged from severe physical attacks, resulting in deep cuts, to individuals fleeing their communities, making it challenging for their families to locate them. Those affected express that the situation is increasingly becoming more challenging for them.
In June 2023, two individuals identified only as Alhassan and Fuseini faced an attack and were expelled from a Muslim community in Kumasi over similar accusations. Their families have struggled to trace their whereabouts, and all attempts to contact them through phone calls have proven unsuccessful.
