Atwima Nwabiagya MCE Joins Forestry Commission to Plant 200 Trees Under President Mahama’s “Tree for Life” Campaign

As part of the nationwide “Tree for Life” campaign aimed at restoring Ghana’s depleted forest reserves, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Atwima Nwabiagya, Hon. Wisdom Boamah, has led a significant tree planting exercise in collaboration with the Forestry Commission. The event, held today within the municipality, saw the planting of over 200 tree seedlings.
The “Tree for Life” initiative was launched by President John Dramani Mahama on March 21, 2025, with the ambitious goal of planting 30 million trees across Ghana by the end of June 2025. The programme is a bold response to the threats posed by climate change, deforestation, and unsustainable land use practices.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Wisdom Boamah reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to the national agenda for environmental protection and sustainable development.
“This initiative is not only about restoring our forests but also about safeguarding the future of our communities. Trees improve soil fertility, protect water bodies, and offer long-term benefits for both farmers and the general public,” the MCE noted.
He further called on schools, churches, traditional authorities, and community groups within the municipality to join hands in protecting the environment through active participation in tree planting.
In a media interaction after the event, Mr. Abraham Essel from the Forestry Commission provided insight into the types of trees being planted.
“We are focusing on a mix of indigenous and economic tree species. These include Mahogany, Wawa, Cedrela, Mango, and Coconut. This combination helps to both restore forest cover and provide income-generating opportunities for local communities,” he explained.
Mr. Essel highlighted the importance of community involvement in ensuring the success of the project.
“This initiative ties into global calls for action on climate and environmental protection. Everyone has a role to play—governments, local assemblies, and ordinary citizens. Together, we can make a real difference,” he stated.
Today’s exercise forms part of a broader effort within the Ashanti Region and beyond to promote a culture of tree planting and environmental conservation. The Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Assembly has pledged to continue working with stakeholders to ensure that the trees planted today are nurtured and sustained to maturity.
The “Tree for Life” campaign stands as a national symbol of Ghana’s renewed commitment to a greener, healthier, and more resilient future.
