Atwima Mponua MP Hon. Seth Osei Akoto Honors 13 Outstanding Teachers and 23 BECE Top Performers, Announces Scholarship Scheme

The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Seth Osei Akoto, has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to promoting education in the district by honoring outstanding teachers and brilliant students at the maiden edition of the “Heroes of Education” Awards. The historic event, held on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Nyinahin, was organized under the theme “Empowering Teacher Commitment Through Motivation” and brought together traditional leaders, education officials, parents, students, and stakeholders to celebrate excellence and inspire renewed dedication to education.

In his address, Hon. Seth Osei Akoto commended teachers for their tireless efforts in shaping the minds of future generations, describing them as the true architects of national development. He explained that the awards formed part of his broader vision to motivate educators and raise the standard of education in Atwima Mponua. The MP noted that teachers play a vital role in nation-building and must be recognized and supported to deliver their best in nurturing young talents.

Hon. Osei Akoto expressed deep concern over the recent poor performance of students in both the BECE and WASSCE examinations in the district, describing the situation as worrying and calling for urgent collective action. He revealed that he has instructed the District Director of Education to prepare and submit a comprehensive strategic plan by the end of the year to help identify the causes of the problem and propose practical solutions to improve academic outcomes. He stressed that education remains the foundation for sustainable development, and he is determined to prioritize it as a central focus of his leadership in the constituency.

As part of the awards ceremony, the MP presented 13 distinguished educators—comprising 12 teachers and one non-teaching staff—with 43-inch flat-screen televisions, gas burners, and certificates of honour. Additionally, 23 top-performing BECE candidates were rewarded with trunks, chop boxes, and student mattresses valued at GH¢55,000 to support their transition into senior high school. He also announced plans to establish a scholarship scheme to support brilliant but needy students and provide professional development opportunities for teachers across the constituency.

Some of the award-winning teachers and students, affectionately referred to as “Awateachers,” expressed their gratitude to the MP for the recognition, describing it as a great source of motivation. The teachers, however, used the occasion to draw attention to some challenges they face in the district, particularly the lack of staff accommodation. They explained that due to the mining nature of the area, rental costs have become extremely high, forcing some teachers to seek transfers to other districts. They appealed to the MP, the government, and the District Assembly to consider constructing teachers’ bungalows to help alleviate their accommodation difficulties and reduce the high teacher turnover in the area.

In response, Hon. Osei Akoto acknowledged the accommodation challenge and assured that he would work closely with the District Assembly, the Ghana Education Service, and the Ministry of Education to explore options for constructing decent staff bungalows across Atwima Mponua. He reaffirmed his commitment to improving teacher welfare, strengthening educational infrastructure, and ensuring that teachers are given the support they need to thrive in their profession.

The MP also commended the District Directorate of Education for its dedication and encouraged teachers to remain focused, disciplined, and innovative in their teaching. He expressed optimism that with motivation, commitment, and collaboration, the district’s educational performance would improve significantly in the coming years.

The event, which was graced by traditional authorities, education officers, parents, and students, ended on a joyous note with thunderous applause for the awardees and the MP. Many participants praised Hon. Seth Osei Akoto for his visionary leadership, describing the initiative as a milestone in recognizing the critical role of teachers and students in driving the development of Atwima Mponua.

As the ceremony concluded, the message was clear: when teachers are supported and motivated, students perform better, communities progress, and the nation thrives. Hon. Seth Osei Akoto’s Heroes of Education Awards has not only rekindled the spirit of excellence but also reaffirmed his determination to build a brighter educational future for all in the Atwima Mponua Constituency.
