Atwima Mponua MP Hon Seth Osei Akoto Fulfills Promise to Celebrate Education Heroes with Televisions, Chop Boxes, and Certificates Worth GH¢55,000

The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua Constituency, Hon. Seth Osei Akoto, has fulfilled his long-standing promise to celebrate and motivate teachers and students by organizing the maiden edition of the “Heroes of Education” Awards Ceremony. The memorable event, held on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Nyinahin, brought together traditional leaders, education authorities, parents, teachers, students, and the media to honor dedication, hard work, and excellence in education.
Hon. Seth Osei Akoto, who personally sponsored the ceremony, presented awards and educational materials valued at GH¢55,000 to deserving teachers and students. The presentation included forty-three-inch flat-screen television sets, gas burners, certificates, trunks, chop boxes, and student mattresses as part of his broader initiative to reward excellence and inspire commitment in education delivery across the constituency.

In total, thirteen outstanding teachers—comprising twelve from the KG, JHS, and SHS levels and one non-teaching staff—were recognized for their outstanding service, while twenty-three top-performing BECE students from grades six to nine received educational items to support their studies.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Osei Akoto commended the tireless efforts of teachers in the district, describing them as the “true architects of the nation’s future.” He explained that the initiative was part of his vision to raise educational standards and motivate educators to continue giving their best. Speaking on the theme “Empowering Teacher Commitment Through Motivation,” he emphasized that motivation is the key to improving teaching and learning outcomes, stating that “when teachers are inspired, students perform better, and when students are motivated, communities prosper.”

The MP also praised the District Directorate of Education and the staff of the Ghana Education Service for their commitment despite the numerous challenges confronting the education sector in the district. However, he expressed concern over recent Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and WASSCE results, which he described as not encouraging. Hon. Osei Akoto therefore urged all stakeholders to work together to reverse the declining performance trend and directed the District Director of Education to submit a comprehensive proposal by the end of the year outlining measures to improve results.

Some of the teachers who received awards expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the MP for the recognition and generosity, describing the gesture as a great morale booster that would spur them to work harder. However, they also used the occasion to draw attention to one of the most pressing challenges affecting teachers in the district — inadequate accommodation.

They explained that due to the high cost of rent, largely influenced by the mining activities within the Atwima Mponua area, many teachers are struggling to secure affordable housing. They appealed to the government and the MP to consider constructing teacher accommodation facilities in the district to ease their burden and prevent frequent teacher transfers caused by high rent. They noted that adequate housing would improve teacher retention and ultimately enhance the quality of education delivery.

The top-performing BECE students also expressed profound appreciation to Hon. Osei Akoto for his support and encouragement. They pledged to study diligently to achieve their academic goals, promising to make both the MP and the Atwima Mponua Constituency proud through their future achievements.

In a rousing announcement that drew loud applause, Hon. Osei Akoto revealed plans to establish a scholarship scheme for both teachers and students in the district. He explained that the scholarship would support brilliant but needy students and provide career development opportunities for teachers to upgrade their professional skills. He reaffirmed his commitment to making education the cornerstone of development in Atwima Mponua, stating that “no teacher or student should be left behind due to lack of resources or motivation.”

The ceremony, graced by the District Chief Executive, the District Director of Education, traditional leaders, and community members, was widely praised as a visionary and transformative initiative. Many lauded Hon. Osei Akoto for prioritizing education and demonstrating exceptional leadership in promoting excellence in teaching and learning.

The Heroes of Education Awards is expected to become an annual event in Atwima Mponua, celebrating dedication, excellence, and innovation in the education sector while strengthening the constituency’s commitment to quality learning and sustainable development.
