Atafoa New Site Residents Plea for Urgent Electricity Restoration

Residents of Atafoa New Site in the Bantama constituency are crying out for immediate intervention from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) following a week-long power outage that has plunged the community into complete darkness.

The outage, which residents say was caused by a damaged transformer, has brought severe disruptions to everyday life and pushed many small businesses, especially cold store operators, to the brink of collapse. According to affected shop owners, thousands of Ghana cedis worth of perishable goods have gone to waste due to the inability to preserve them without refrigeration.

Speaking to media personnel during a visit to the area, some residents expressed deep frustration over the delay in restoring power. They acknowledged that ECG officials had visited the community days ago to assess the situation, but since then, there has been no follow-up or resolution, leaving them in limbo.

“We’re really suffering,” lamented Kwame Ofori, a cold store operator. “I’ve lost nearly all my stock—fish, chicken, and sausages—all gone bad. This is our livelihood. ECG must come to our aid now.”

Beyond the economic toll, the lack of electricity has also sparked growing concerns over security. Residents say the cover of darkness has emboldened petty criminals and increased the risk of robberies, especially during the night.

Madam Abena Serwaa, a mother of three, also spoke about the domestic impact. “We can’t store food, children can’t study in the evenings, and even basic household chores are difficult. It’s as if we are living in the stone age,” she said, visibly distressed.

The community is appealing to ECG and relevant authorities to treat their case with the urgency it deserves. They are demanding that the faulty transformer be replaced or repaired without further delay to help restore normalcy in their lives.

As the power outage stretches into its second week, the frustration among residents continues to grow. Many are hopeful that public attention to their plight will prompt ECG to act swiftly and ensure that such prolonged blackouts do not occur again in The future.
