Ashanti Sub-Transmission Engineers Commended for Heroic Work in Asawinso Power Restoration

A team of engineers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been commended for their heroic and selfless efforts in restoring power at Asawinso in the Western North Region, successfully averting a major electricity outage that threatened households, businesses, and the local economy.

The incident occurred in the early hours of January 31, 2026, at approximately 12:13 a.m., when a fault developed on a GRIDCo transformer (T2) at the Asawinso Bulk Supply Point (BSP). The fault caused widespread power outages affecting communities including Awaso, Dwenase, Sefwi Wiawso, New Obuasi, Jejetreso, and surrounding areas, raising concerns about prolonged customer downtime and potential revenue losses for ECG.

Initial attempts to restore electricity from the nearby Joaboso BSP proved unsuccessful due to poor power quality, making intervention more challenging. Recognising the urgency of the situation, ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission engineers based in Kumasi were mobilised. The team departed at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, and arrived at Asawinso by 6:00 p.m., immediately commencing work under difficult night-time conditions.

Equipped only with touch lights, the engineers meticulously dismantled and rerouted high-voltage cables to an alternative transformer (T3). Their dedicated and painstaking efforts ensured the successful transfer of electrical loads, restoring stability and supply by around 8:00 a.m. the following morning. Their timely intervention not only prevented prolonged outages but also safeguarded substantial revenue for ECG while maintaining uninterrupted economic activity in the region.

Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, lauded the engineers’ dedication and professionalism, saying:

“Your selfless commitment has brought relief to households and businesses, prevented significant revenue loss, and reinforced ECG’s image as a reliable and responsive service provider. We commend your sacrifice and dedication in serving our cherished customers.”

The heroic team that stabilised the Asawinso BSP alongside regional colleagues comprised Joseph Opoku (Team Lead), Samuel Adongo, Prosper Boadi Kudzo, Isaac Sarfo, and Oscar Karikari. Asawinso BSP remains a vital facility under the operational oversight of ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission in the Western North Region, highlighting the importance of swift and precise intervention in ensuring power reliability and supporting economic stability.
