The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested three persons in connection with the unlawful possession of a large cache of ammunition following a successful interception operation at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.
According to a press release issued by the Regional Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in Bekwai, the arrests were made on 26th December, 2025, when police officers on duty intercepted a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771-18. The vehicle was travelling from Accra towards Walewale en route to Paga when it was stopped for routine checks.

The suspects initially arrested were identified as Kwame Afram, the driver of the bus, and Godfred Essel, his mate. A thorough search conducted on the bus led to the discovery of two concealed containers which contained a total of two thousand six hundred (2,600) rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
Following further intelligence-led investigations, a third suspect, Mohammed Sisu, aged 21, who was identified as the intended recipient of the ammunition, was arrested at Walewale on 27th December, 2025, when he arrived to receive the consignment.

An extended search of the bus also resulted in the recovery of additional items hidden under the driver’s seat. These included two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots. All the retrieved items have been secured as exhibits for ongoing investigations.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the Kia Granbird bus and all recovered exhibits have been impounded by the police.

The press release, signed by the Ashanti South Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, reaffirmed the Police Command’s commitment to clamping down on the illegal trafficking of arms and ammunition and assured the public that all persons found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law as investigations continue.
