Ashanti Regional NPP MPs Donate GHS 150,000 to Victims of Adum Market Fire, Pledge Ongoing Support

The Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made a generous donation of GHS 150,000 to the victims of the devastating fire that recently swept through the Adum market in Kumasi. The donation, aimed at alleviating the immediate financial hardships of the affected traders, was made during an inspection of the fire-ravaged site on Friday, March 21, 2025.

Led by Hon. Kofi Amankwaa Manu, former Minister for Defense under the Nana Addo-led NPP government and current Member of Parliament for Atwima Kwanwoma Constituency, the MPs offered their condolences and support to the traders who had lost everything in the fire.

Hon. Amankwaa Manu, addressing the media and traders at the scene, assured them of the NPP’s commitment to standing by them during this difficult period. He emphasized that the donation was just the first step, and the party would continue to assist until the market was fully rebuilt.

“We know the pain you are going through. We are here not just to give you immediate help, but to show our solidarity and commitment to helping you rebuild your businesses. We will continue to support you throughout this process,” Hon. Manu stated.

The fire, which broke out on March 21, destroyed over 1,000 shops and left traders with significant losses, amounting to millions of Ghanaian cedis. Hon. Lawyer Obiri Yeboah, the Member of Parliament for Subin, had previously written to Parliament to inform them of the incident and urge swift action to assist the victims.

In his remarks, Hon. Yeboah stressed the importance of community efforts in rebuilding the market. He encouraged the traders to come together and rebuild the market with the support of both the NPP and the wider community, ensuring that the market could resume operations as quickly as possible.

“We will rally together and support you in every way possible. This fire has not only affected you individually, but it has also impacted the entire community. We are all in this together,” said Hon. Yeboah.

The donation of GHS 150,000 was presented in the hope of helping the traders cover some of their immediate expenses, such as replacing goods and helping those whose livelihoods were destroyed. The MPs assured the traders that further assistance would be provided as they moved forward in the recovery process.

Bernard Antwi Bosiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, also known as Chairman Wontumi, was present during the inspection and voiced his support for the victims. He urged former President John Dramani Mahama to offer assistance to the Adum fire victims, pointing to the help Mahama provided to those affected by the Kantamanto fire disaster in 2017.

“We urge President Mahama to consider offering the same level of support to the traders here in Adum as he did in Kantamanto. The people of this region need help, and together, we can rebuild,” Chairman Wontumi stated.

The fire that devastated the Adum market left many traders uncertain about their future. However, with the generous donation from the Ashanti NPP MPs and their promise of continued support, the affected traders are hopeful that they will soon be able to rebuild their businesses and return to their livelihoods.

As the efforts to support the victims continue, the NPP MPs remain focused on providing both short-term and long-term assistance to help the traders recover. With the combined efforts of political leaders, traders, and the wider community, the Adum market is expected to rise again, stronger than before, and continue to contribute to the economic vitality of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.

The NPP’s swift response to the Adum fire disaster highlights the party’s commitment to serving the people and standing with them in times of crisis.
