The Ashanti Regional Peace Council has been urged to strengthen its engagement in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts beyond electoral periods. This call was made during a meeting with the Council, where the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue and mediation in fostering regional stability.
Dr. Amoakohene underscored that the Peace Council must be recognized as an essential pillar of governance, not just during election years but in all facets of community life. He highlighted their legal mandate as a critical tool in shaping peaceful coexistence and preventing conflicts before they escalate.
“The Peace Council’s role should not be limited to election-related interventions. They must be an active force in promoting unity, dialogue, and conflict resolution across all sectors of society,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.
During the meeting, the Council was charged to focus on three key areas:
✅ Offinso Chieftaincy Disputes – The Council was encouraged to intensify its involvement in mediating the ongoing chieftaincy litigations in Offinso. Their expertise in peacebuilding is expected to help facilitate lasting solutions and restore harmony among traditional authorities.
✅ Violence in Football Matches – With recent incidents of clashes at football games, the Peace Council was urged to collaborate with sports authorities, supporters’ groups, and security agencies to curb violence, ensuring that sports remain a unifying force rather than a source of conflict.
✅ Responsible Mining Practices – The Council was also encouraged to partner with the government in engaging communities on responsible mining. This initiative aims to promote sustainable practices that safeguard the environment while protecting the livelihoods of future generations.
The Ashanti Regional Peace Council welcomed these recommendations and pledged to intensify its mediation efforts across the region. As Ghana continues to navigate social and political challenges, stakeholders believe that a proactive Peace Council will be instrumental in maintaining long-term stability and development.
