Ashanti Regional Minister Takes Immediate Action to Address Crisis at Drobonso SHS

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has taken swift action following a disturbing assessment of Drobonso Senior High School (SHS), where approximately 190 students were posted despite the facility being in an uninhabitable state.

During his visit, Dr. Amoakohene was alarmed by the dire conditions that have left the school unfit for academic activities. The key issues identified included:

  • The theft of over 170 light poles, leaving the school without electricity. Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter.
  • Severe insect infestations, including bees, creating a hazardous environment.
  • Encroachment by cattle and goats, compromising sanitation and security on campus.
  • Classrooms being used as storage facilities for maize instead of for teaching and learning.
  • Deterioration of buildings and furniture, making it impossible for students to occupy the school safely.

In response to these serious challenges, the Minister announced a series of urgent interventions to rectify the situation:

  1. Reassignment of Students: All 190 students posted to Drobonso SHS will be relocated to other schools where they can receive quality education in a conducive environment.
  2. Resumption of Construction Work: A crucial meeting has been scheduled with the contractor and educational authorities to ensure work resumes and is completed as soon as possible.
  3. Restoration of Electricity: The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been invited to assess the school’s connection to the national grid to provide stable power.
  4. Road and Transportation Improvements: Plans are underway to address road access and transportation challenges before the school officially opens for academic work.

Dr. Amoakohene reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment, under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to ensuring the completion of Drobonso SHS. He assured the community that the necessary steps are being taken to transform the facility into a modern and fully functional senior high school.

The Minister also called on all stakeholders, including traditional authorities and community members, to support efforts to protect and maintain public educational infrastructure, emphasizing that collective responsibility is key to sustainable development.

This intervention highlights the government’s determination to prioritize education and provide safe, well-equipped schools for students across the region.
