Ashanti Regional Minister Engages Media, Issues Strong Warning to Illegal miners

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has reaffirmed his commitment to tackling illegal mining and promoting regional development during a crucial engagement with journalists in Kumasi. Addressing the media, he outlined his vision for the Ashanti Region while issuing a stern ultimatum to illegal miners operating within forest reserves and water bodies.

Dr. Amoakohene, who assumed office recently, emphasized the government’s unwavering stance on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. He announced a two-week deadline for all unauthorized miners to vacate protected areas or face the full force of the law.

“We cannot allow illegal mining to destroy our environment, pollute our water bodies, and threaten our future. Those engaged in mining within forest reserves and along rivers must stop immediately. After two weeks, we will deploy a task force to enforce the law without compromise,” he warned.

The Minister stressed that illegal mining has caused severe degradation of land and water resources in the Ashanti Region, affecting livelihoods and endangering public health. He assured the media that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration is fully committed to reversing the damage through strict enforcement and sustainable mining initiatives.

Commitment to Development and Security

Beyond the fight against illegal mining, Dr. Amoakohene outlined key areas of focus for his tenure. These include:

Job Creation for the Youth – He emphasized the need to provide alternative employment opportunities to deter young people from engaging in illegal mining.

Infrastructure Development – The Minister pledged to improve roads, healthcare, and education facilities to enhance the quality of life in the region.

Security and Law Enforcement – He assured residents that measures are being put in place to curb crime and maintain peace in Kumasi and beyond.

Sanitation and Public Health – Dr. Amoakohene highlighted his determination to tackle sanitation issues and improve waste management systems.

“President Mahama has charged me to ensure that Asanteman receives its fair share of development. We will work closely with all stakeholders to address the challenges confronting the region,” he stated.

Regulating Transport Fares and Market Tolls

During the media engagement, the Minister also addressed concerns regarding rising transport fares and market tolls. He clarified that no immediate toll increases are planned and assured the public that any future changes would involve consultations with relevant stakeholders.

He also cautioned public transport operators against imposing unauthorized fare hikes, promising strict enforcement to protect commuters from undue financial burdens.

Support from Traditional Leaders and Civil Society

Dr. Amoakohene’s strong stance on illegal mining and regional development has received support from traditional leaders, environmental activists, and community groups. Many see his leadership as a crucial step toward restoring the ecological integrity of the Ashanti Region and fostering sustainable economic growth.

As the two-week deadline for illegal miners approaches, all eyes are on the regional authorities to see how enforcement measures will unfold. Meanwhile, residents and stakeholders remain hopeful that the Minister’s vision will bring much-needed transformation to the region.
