Ashanti Police Recover AK-47, Ammunition and Other Items from Abandoned Vehicle at Aputuoagya-Bekwai Road

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched full-scale investigations following the discovery of dangerous weapons and ammunition in an abandoned vehicle at Aputuoagya-Bekwai road on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

According to a statement from the Command, the operation was carried out by the Kuntanase District Patrol Team during a routine patrol. The officers reportedly sighted a white Toyota Sienta private vehicle with registration number NR 289-24 parked suspiciously near a bushy area along the roadside.

Two male adults were seen standing beside the vehicle allegedly smoking a substance suspected to be a narcotic drug. However, upon noticing the presence of the patrol team, the suspects fled into a nearby bush, successfully escaping despite a chase by the police officers.

A search conducted on the abandoned vehicle revealed a cache of weapons and other incriminating items believed to have been intended for a criminal operation. The items retrieved included:

  • One (1) AK-47 assault rifle (Serial No. 29546)
  • One (1) locally manufactured firearm
  • Two (2) AK-47 magazines, each loaded with 30 rounds
  • Four (4) packets of AK-47 ammunition, each containing 25 rounds
  • Seven (7) loose rounds of ammunition
  • One pair of Wellington boots
  • One Huawei smartphone
  • Cowrie shells
  • One pair of sandals
  • A Ghana Card and Temporary Driver’s License (name withheld for security reasons)

The vehicle was subsequently towed to the Kuntanase Police Station, and the weapons, ammunition, and other exhibits have been secured to aid further investigations.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Command, assured the public that the police remain resolute in their commitment to fighting violent crime in the region. He noted that swift interventions such as this demonstrate the police’s determination to clamp down on criminal networks that pose threats to public safety.

“The Ashanti Regional Police Command is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that all individuals who attempt to destabilize the peace of the region are brought to book,” DSP Ahianyo stressed.

The police further appealed to members of the public to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspects. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or call the police emergency numbers: 191, 18555, or 112.

This latest recovery adds to the ongoing efforts by the police to curb the proliferation of illicit weapons in the Ashanti Region, a menace authorities fear could fuel violent crimes if not contained.
