The Ashanti Regional Youth Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a firm three-day ultimatum to the Kumawu constituency leadership, demanding that they either present solid evidence or issue a public apology regarding the alleged tribal comments made by Dr. Kwabena Dufour concerning the nomination of District Chief Executives (DCEs). The allegations have caused significant unrest within the party, with the youth wing strongly condemning them as baseless and harmful to the party’s reputation.
In a press conference today, Mr. Frank Basoah, the National President of the Ashanti Regional Youth Caucus, defended Dr. Dufour against the accusations, calling them a deliberate attempt to undermine his credibility and derail his political future. Basoah emphasized that Dr. Dufour, a highly respected and influential figure within the NDC, has always stood for unity and inclusivity within the party and would never make divisive statements based on ethnicity.
“These claims are completely false and unfounded. Dr. Kwabena Dufour has long been known for promoting unity within the NDC, and there is absolutely no way he would make such hurtful and divisive comments. This is a calculated effort to discredit him, especially as he is being considered as a potential flagbearer for the NDC in the 2028 elections,” Basoah stated.
The Ashanti Regional Youth Caucus is now demanding that the Kumawu constituency executives either provide irrefutable evidence of the alleged comments made by Dr. Dufour or issue a public apology within the next three days. Basoah warned that should the Kumawu leadership fail to meet these demands, the youth wing would take decisive action to defend Dr. Dufour’s reputation and protect the integrity of the party.
“If the Kumawu constituency leadership cannot substantiate these accusations, they must issue a full public apology to Dr. Dufour. If they fail to do so, we will not hesitate to take appropriate action,” Basoah warned.
Additionally, Basoah called on the Kumawu constituency leadership, including Constituency Chairman Mr. Akwalakwagyi and NDC parliamentary candidate Mr. Akwasi Amankwaah (TOM C), to provide clarity regarding their involvement in the recent demonstrations organized by local NDC members in Kumawu. The protests, which have escalated the tension in the constituency, are linked to the allegations against Dr. Dufour.
“We call on Chairman Akwalakwagyi and Mr. TOM C to come forward and clarify their roles in the demonstrations in Kumawu. If they were aware of or involved in spreading these divisive allegations, they must address it openly and make their position clear,” Basoah said.
The controversy has already led to growing divisions within the NDC, with the youth wing firmly rallying behind Dr. Dufour. The party’s unity is being tested, particularly with the 2028 elections looming on the horizon. The Ashanti Regional Youth Caucus has made it clear that it will not tolerate attempts to damage the reputation of one of its leading figures, and it will take all necessary steps to ensure that Dr. Dufour is protected from unfounded accusations.
As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the Kumawu constituency executives to see whether they will respond by either proving the allegations or issuing a public apology. The resolution of this dispute could have far-reaching implications for the NDC, particularly in maintaining party unity as the 2028 elections draw nearer.
