The Ashanti Regional Chapter of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has introduced an innovative skills training program designed to provide its members with additional income opportunities beyond their standard salaries. This initiative was highlighted during the International Youth Day celebration.
According to Mr. Prosper Takyi, Chairman of the GNAT Ashanti Chapter, the program’s primary aim is to engage members, particularly the youth, in the creative arts and practical skills sectors. The training provides teachers with new abilities that can be utilized in their spare time outside of their classroom responsibilities.
Mr. Takyi emphasized that teachers often have free time after school hours, which can be effectively used to learn new skills that generate extra income. This additional revenue can significantly enhance their financial stability.
In light of the upcoming general elections, Mr. Takyi also noted the program’s potential role in mitigating youth unrest. He argued that offering constructive activities and income-generating opportunities can help prevent young people from being drawn into political violence or chaos.
As part of the initiative, GNAT members are learning to produce items such as shower gel, Nido, and liquid soap. Mr. Takyi pointed out that while teaching alone might not lead to immense wealth, these supplementary skills can provide significant financial benefits.
The announcement was made during the International Youth Day celebration, which carried the theme “Youth Skills for Peace and Development.” The event underscored the importance of equipping young people with skills that contribute to both personal and community development.
In interviews with some of the association’s members, there was widespread appreciation for the new program. Members expressed their gratitude, noting that the skills acquired will not only bolster their income but also offer financial security.
