Asawinso Power Crisis Averted: ECG Engineers Restore Supply Amid Challenging Conditions

A dedicated team of engineers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully averted a major power crisis at Asawinso in the Western North Region, restoring electricity supply to affected communities and preventing significant disruptions to both households and businesses.

The emergency arose on January 31, 2026, at approximately 12:13 a.m., when a fault developed on a GRIDCo transformer (T2) at the Asawinso Bulk Supply Point (BSP). The fault triggered widespread outages affecting Awaso, Dwenase, Sefwi Wiawso, New Obuasi, Jejetreso, and surrounding communities, posing serious threats to economic activity and daily life in the region.

Initial attempts to restore power from the nearby Joaboso BSP were unsuccessful due to poor power quality, which heightened the risk of prolonged customer downtime. Recognising the urgency, ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission engineers, based in Kumasi, were promptly mobilised. The team departed at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, arriving at Asawinso by 6:00 p.m., and immediately commenced work under challenging night-time conditions.

Working carefully under limited lighting using touch lights, the engineers dismantled and rerouted high-voltage cables to an alternative transformer (T3). Their meticulous efforts enabled the successful transfer of loads and restored power stability by around 8:00 a.m. the following morning, averting what could have been a prolonged outage and substantial financial loss for ECG.

Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, commended the team on their dedication and professionalism:

“Your selfless commitment has not only brought relief to households and businesses but has also prevented significant revenue loss and reinforced ECG’s reputation as a reliable and responsive service provider. Your sacrifice in serving our cherished customers is truly commendable.”

The engineers who played a pivotal role in stabilising the Asawinso BSP alongside regional counterparts include Joseph Opoku (Team Lead), Samuel Adongo, Prosper Boadi Kudzo, Isaac Sarfo, and Oscar Karikari. Asawinso BSP remains a critical facility under ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission oversight in the Western North Region, underscoring the importance of swift and precise interventions in maintaining power reliability and supporting regional economic activities.
