The Asare Bediako Senior High School (SHS) in Akrokeri, located in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti Region, is grappling with severe infrastructure challenges, negatively impacting both students and staff. The lack of essential facilities such as a fence wall, teachers’ quarters, a science laboratory, and adequate toilet facilities has created an unfavorable learning environment.
Speaking during the school’s SRC Week celebration, the headmistress, Mrs. Beatrice Kyei, expressed deep concerns over the state of the school and made a passionate appeal to the government, alumni, and other stakeholders to intervene.
“Our students and staff are facing serious challenges due to the lack of basic amenities. The absence of a fence wall has made security a major concern, exposing students and teachers to external threats. Additionally, the lack of teachers’ quarters makes it difficult to retain qualified educators, as many have to travel long distances to work,” she lamented.
She further emphasized the urgent need for a well-equipped science laboratory to enhance practical learning, as well as improved toilet facilities to ensure proper sanitation for both students and staff.
Mr. George Mensah, Head of the Mathematics Department, also voiced his concerns, stressing that the absence of a science laboratory is hindering academic progress, particularly in STEM subjects.
“Science education is highly practical, and without a well-equipped lab, our students are at a disadvantage. We urge the government and other well-meaning individuals to come to our aid to provide the necessary infrastructure for effective teaching and learning,” he stated.
Some students also shared their frustrations about the dire conditions under which they study. They noted that the lack of potable water, poor sanitation facilities, and the general lack of infrastructure make life on campus very difficult.
“Using the few available toilet facilities is a struggle, and sometimes we have to walk long distances just to find a place to relieve ourselves. It affects our concentration in class,” one student lamented.
Another student added, “We feel unsafe without a fence wall. Strangers can easily enter the campus, and this poses a threat to our security. We need urgent action to address these challenges.”
The current situation at Asare Bediako SHS underscores the broader infrastructure challenges facing many schools across the country. As education remains a key pillar for national development, it is imperative for the government and relevant stakeholders to take immediate action to address these pressing concerns and provide a conducive learning environment for the students.
The school authorities, students, and staff are hopeful that their plea will receive the needed attention, and that the necessary interventions will be made to ensure quality education at Asare Bediako SHS.
