Asante Akyem Nifahene, Nana Yamoah Agyemang, Urges Ghanaian Students to Choose University Courses That Lead to Employment
The Asante Akyem Nifahene, Nana Yamoah Agyemang, who also serves as the Principal of Tetrefu Technical Institute, has called on Ghanaian students to be deliberate and strategic in selecting university and tertiary education programmes that will prepare them for meaningful employment and sustainable careers.

Speaking to media in an interview Nana Yamoah Agyemang cautioned against enrolling in courses simply because they are popular or considered prestigious. He urged the youth to focus on programmes that equip them with practical skills and provide clear pathways to job opportunities after graduation.

Highlighting specific examples, he questioned the relevance of programmes such as aviation and aquaculture, asking, “How many aeroplanes do we have in Ghana to accommodate graduates from aviation programmes? How many major water bodies exist to absorb graduates of fisheries or aquaculture?”

He explained that the purpose of his advice is twofold: first, to help students make informed academic choices that align with the country’s economic realities, and second, to equip them with skills that guarantee employment and financial independence after school.

The Nifahene stressed that while universities are designed to train the nation’s youth, students must choose courses that enhance their employability. Pursuing programmes without considering their practical applications could leave graduates struggling to find work.

He urged students to conduct thorough research and seek guidance from education counselors, experienced professionals, and family members before making decisions. He emphasized that education is not just about obtaining certificates but about acquiring knowledge and skills that promote self-reliance and meaningful societal contributions.

“Education is not just about obtaining a certificate,” he said. “It is about gaining the skills and knowledge that will enable you to secure a sustainable livelihood and contribute meaningfully to society.”

The Nifahene made these remarks while swearing the oath of allegiance to the Paramount Chief of the Asante Akyem Bompata Traditional Area, Nana Effah-Apenteng, during a colourful traditional ceremony held in Asante Akyem Bompata, Asante Akim South District, Ashanti Region. The ceremony was attended by chiefs, elders, family members, and residents of the traditional area.

His advice comes amid growing concerns over unemployment among graduates in Ghana, highlighting the importance of pursuing programmes that match both personal interests and the country’s economic needs. He concluded by urging students to prioritize employable, practical courses to ensure that their education translates into successful and sustainable careers.
