Asanko Gold Mines Dominates National Inter-Mines Safety Contest with Outstanding 98% Score

Asanko Gold Mines Limited has reaffirmed its leadership in health, safety, and community engagement by emerging as the overall winner in the community teams category of the 2025 National Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition organized by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

The competition, held over the weekend, brought together both staff and community teams from large-scale mining firms across Ghana to showcase their preparedness and efficiency in responding to emergencies within mining operations and their host communities. The event serves as a key platform for promoting safety consciousness and building strong partnerships between mining companies and the communities in which they operate.

Asanko Gold Mines’ community team demonstrated exceptional skill and professionalism, scoring an impressive 98 percent to secure the top spot. Abosso Goldfields Damang placed second with 89 percent, followed by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine with 85.5 percent, while the Ghana Manganese Company scored 27 percent. Other notable participants included Golden Star Wassa, AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem, and AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi, who also exhibited strong commitment to the safety ideals championed by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

In the staff category, Golden Star Wassa emerged first with 59 percent, closely followed by Asanko Gold Mine with 58.5 percent, while AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi and AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem recorded 52 and 50 percent respectively.

The Director for Analysis, Research, and Finance at the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Christopher Opoku Darko, commended all participating companies for their outstanding dedication to safety and the wellbeing of their communities. He emphasized the importance of involving host communities in safety training and empowering women to take part in such initiatives, noting that a truly safe mining environment extends beyond the mine site.

According to him, a mine can only be considered safe when the surrounding community is equally protected, adding that the Chamber remains committed to deepening collaboration between the mining industry and host communities to enhance emergency response and first aid capacity.

The Managing Director of Asanko Gold Mine Limited, Dr. Charles Amoah, expressed gratitude to the Ghana Chamber of Mines for granting Asanko the privilege of hosting this year’s event. He reiterated the company’s long-standing commitment to safety, stressing that it is not merely an occasional exercise but a mindset and way of life that must guide every action of employees and community members.

He emphasized that the company places safety at the center of its operations and continues to invest in training, education, and safety campaigns to ensure that both its workforce and surrounding communities remain alert and equipped to handle emergencies effectively.

This year’s competition was held under the theme “Every Moment is an Ambush, Think Safety All the Time,” a timely reminder of the need for constant vigilance and preparedness in preventing accidents and safeguarding lives.

The event featured live demonstrations of emergency response drills, first aid administration, and practical rescue simulations. It also provided an opportunity for mining companies to share best practices and reinforce the collective responsibility of ensuring safety at all times.

Asanko Gold Mines’ outstanding performance in the competition reflects its deep commitment to maintaining high safety standards and fostering a culture of awareness, readiness, and cooperation. The company’s success is a testament to its proactive approach to training, teamwork, and community safety—values that continue to make it one of Ghana’s leading examples of responsible and sustainable mining practice.

Through its victory, Asanko Gold Mines Limited has once again set a benchmark in safety excellence and community collaboration, underscoring the vital role that consistent training and preparedness play in protecting lives and sustaining responsible mining across the country.
