The Akrokerri Hospital which serves the Akrokerri township and neighboring towns in the Adansi North District has not seen any major upgrade of facilities since it was established in February 1960.
AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine has responded to the infrastructural deficit in the Hospital by refurbishing the Hospital with the construction of Theater, Laboratory and Dispensary facilities, at a cost of GH4 million.
The move forms part of the Health intervention programs and projects underlined in the 10- year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP) of AngloGold Ashanti launched in 2022.
The District Chief Executive, Hon. Kusi Kwaku Eric who joined officials from AngloGold Ashanti at a short sodcutting ceremony at the Akrokerri Hospital lauded the Mining company for the plethora of interventions it has rolled out over the years especially in the 10-year SEDP.
He was optimistic that, the expansion of the facility would welcome more health workers who in diverse ways would serve as positive role models for the youth in the District.
The queen mother of Akrokerri, Nana Serwaa Bruwaa II revealed that, bemoaned the current state of the health facility which she said had not seen any major renovation works since it was established.
She recounted the importance of the hospital which continuously render quality healthcare services to residents in and around the Akrokerri community stressing that, the rehabilitation works by AngloGold Ashanti will serve as a welcome relief to leaders and residents who have long clamored for Improvement in the facilities of the hospital.
She asked the people of Akrokerri to serve as watchdogs in and around the project site to ensure the security of the workers and building materials to avoid unscrupulous persons stealing from there and obstructing the progress of the project.
The Director for the District Health Directorate, Eric Atuahene added that, there are plans to upgrade the hospital into a polyclinic status. This he said would offer enhanced services in E.N.T, Antenatal, General OPD amongst others.
He took the opportunity to remind parents of the need to offer sex education to their girl child in order to avoid teenage pregnancies.
The Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Edmund Oduro Agyei who spoke on behalf of the company said, AGA is putting up the infrastructure in fulfillment of their corporate social responsibility to the people of Adansiman.
She said AGA is committed to making the people in their host communities better of hence will continue to deliver on their promises as contained in their 10- year Socio-Economic Development Plan.
The project which would be constructed by Crisspan Company Limited, an Obuasi based contractor. It is expected to be completed by 27th September, 2024.
