Traditional leaders and residents of Mpatuam and its surrounding communities in the Amansie West District have appealed to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, to withdraw military personnel stationed at the Asanko Gold Mining Company and replace them with police officers.

The call follows a violent clash between residents and soldiers guarding the mining concession, which tragically resulted in the deaths of two community members. The incident has further deepened tensions between the mining company and locals, who accuse the military of intimidation and the use of excessive force.

At a high-level meeting with the Ashanti Regional Minister and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), the chiefs argued that the deployment of armed soldiers has worsened tensions rather than promoting peace. They emphasized that police officers, who have closer ties with the community, would be better positioned to maintain order without escalating hostilities.

Minister’s Assurance

Responding to the concerns, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene acknowledged the grievances of the chiefs and residents. He assured them that their petitions would be forwarded to the President for urgent consideration.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices that will minimize disputes, foster peaceful coexistence, and ensure equitable development within the Amansie West District.

Dr. Amoakohene further appealed to residents to remain calm and exercise restraint while government works toward a peaceful resolution. “The government is determined to put in place a fair and lasting framework for mining activities in this district. We understand your concerns, and they will be addressed at the highest level. In the meantime, I urge all of you to avoid violence and maintain peace,” he said.

The situation in Amansie West remains a test of balancing national security, community safety, and mining interests as stakeholders await government’s final decision on the future role of the military in the area.
