Amansie West Assembly Staff Empowered with Digital Skills through Smart Workplace Training

Staff of the Amansie West District Assembly in the Ashanti Region have received comprehensive training on the Smart Workplace System, a digital innovation introduced by the Office of the Head of Local Government Service (OHLGS) aimed at modernizing administrative operations, enhancing efficiency, and reducing dependence on paper-based processes within local governance structures.
The training formed part of a nationwide effort by the OHLGS to equip officers of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary to operate effectively in a digital environment. The initiative is aligned with the government’s broader vision of promoting a paperless administration and digital transformation across public sector institutions.

Opening the training session,, the District Coordinating Director, commended the OHLGS for the initiative and underscored its importance in building a more responsive and efficient public service. He explained that the Smart Workplace System was designed to simplify communication, streamline workflows, and enhance transparency in government operations.

“As part of government’s digital agenda, this training will enable staff to work smarter, faster, and more efficiently,” Mr. Haligah noted. “The Smart Workplace System eliminates bureaucratic delays, ensures real-time communication, and improves record-keeping in public institutions.”

The Amansie West District Assembly, one of the selected assemblies to benefit from this pilot phase, was introduced to several features of the digital platform. Participants received hands-on demonstrations on how to use electronic memo and correspondence management systems, electronic leave application tools, announcement applications, and other digital components that facilitate inter-departmental coordination and online collaboration.

A member of the Local Government Service technical team and training facilitator, Mr. Frank Kwame Kontor, elaborated on the capabilities of the Smart Workplace System, describing it as a “virtual office environment” where government staff can execute their daily tasks seamlessly without relying on paper documents. He highlighted that the system, already operational at the OHLGS, has drastically reduced printing and photocopying costs while improving productivity and environmental sustainability.

“The Smart Workplace System is a game-changer,” Mr. Kontor emphasized. “It allows for online meetings, digital file storage, team creation, and real-time task management. We encourage staff to fully adopt it and provide feedback to help enhance the system’s functionality.”

He further urged the Assembly staff to embrace the culture of digital work and to take advantage of the system’s user-friendly interface to improve internal communication and documentation processes.

Addressing participants during the session, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie West, Hon. Prince Manu Morris, praised the OHLGS and the Government of Ghana for spearheading such a transformative initiative. He noted that the Smart Workplace System would not only improve administrative efficiency but also contribute to cost savings and improved data security.

“This innovation will help us save money that would otherwise go into printing and purchasing paper,” Hon. Manu Morris stated. “It will also prevent the loss of important files, promote accountability, and ensure that public service delivery is swift and effective. I strongly urge government to extend this initiative to all MMDAs so that every assembly can enjoy the benefits of a modern digital workplace.”

Some staff members who participated in the training expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as timely and forward-looking. They pledged to put the knowledge gained into practice to improve service delivery and communication within the Assembly.

The successful training marks a significant step in Amansie West District Assembly’s journey toward digital governance, reinforcing government’s commitment to fostering innovation, efficiency, and transparency in the local government sector.
