Amansie Central: Businessman-Engineer Benjamin Oppong (Benito) Reshapes Fenaso–Numereso–Nipankyeremia Road to Ease Years of Suffering

Residents and road users along the Fenaso–Numereso–Nipankyeremia stretch in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region have heaved a sigh of relief following the intervention of businessman and engineer, Mr. Benjamin Oppong, popularly known as Benito, who has taken it upon himself to reshape several kilometres of the badly deteriorated road.

Speaking to the media in an interview, Mr. Oppong explained that the decision to embark on the road reshaping exercise was driven by the unbearable suffering endured by residents, drivers and commuters who ply the road daily, especially during the rainy and dry seasons. According to him, the deplorable nature of the road has for years disrupted transportation, affected livelihoods and posed serious risks to human lives.

He said he could no longer sit back and watch his people continue to suffer or even lose their lives due to the poor road conditions, hence his decision to intervene using his own resources. Mr. Oppong revealed that several people have lost their lives on the same road while being rushed to health facilities or referred to Obuasi for further medical treatment, a situation he described as deeply painful and unacceptable.

The engineer-businessman noted that the road reshaping forms part of his commitment to giving back to society and improving the quality of life of the people in the area. He lamented that for a long time, many commercial drivers have refused to operate on the stretch because of its poor condition, leaving residents stranded and making transportation of farm produce extremely difficult.

Mr. Oppong further pointed out that the area is rich in natural resources such as timber, cocoa and gold, yet the road network remains in a deplorable state. He described this as unfair and called on the government to urgently come to the aid of the communities by providing asphalt to properly upgrade the reshaped road.

He also appealed to individuals, corporate bodies and well-meaning citizens to support the ongoing road reshaping effort, stressing that development is a shared responsibility. In addition, he advised drivers using the road to exercise caution and drive carefully to help prevent accidents.

On their part, residents, commercial drivers and motorbike riders (okada riders) expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Benjamin Oppong, popularly known as Benito, for his selfless intervention. They recounted years of hardship caused by the bad road, stating that during the rainy season the road becomes muddy and impassable, while in the dry season it is dusty and extremely uncomfortable.

Some residents disclosed that at certain points, vehicles are forced to park in the middle of the road, compelling passengers to walk long distances and wait until drivers are able to maneuver their way through, a situation they described as heartbreaking.

They collectively appealed to the government to come to their aid by tarring the Fenaso–Numereso–Nipankyeremia road to ensure smooth transportation, improve access to healthcare, boost economic activities and enhance overall development in the area. They also lamented the abandonment of the cocoa roads project by a contractor, which they say has worsened their plight.

The residents expressed hope that Mr. Oppong’s intervention will draw the attention of authorities to the urgent need for a permanent solution to the road challenges facing the communities.
