Akuapem South MP Lawrencia Dziwornu Lauds Black Queens, Says They Deserve More Support Than Black Stars

Member of Parliament for Akuapem South, Hon. Lawrencia Dziwornu, has heaped praise on Ghana’s national women’s football team, the Black Queens, noting that their recent performances have surpassed those of their male counterparts, the Black Stars. According to the lawmaker, the Black Queens have shown resilience, skill, and national pride on the international stage, and it is time they received the same—if not more—support as the men’s team.

Speaking in an interview during a community sports event in Aburi, Hon. Dziwornu did not mince words in applauding the achievements of the Black Queens, stating that their commitment and consistency in recent matches had revived national interest in women’s football.

“In the last few years, the Black Queens have played with passion, determination, and discipline. They’ve outperformed the Black Stars and brought us pride. I believe they deserve not only national applause but the full institutional and financial support to win their next major title,” she stated.

Hon. Dziwornu further emphasized the need for government and corporate bodies to redirect attention to women’s sports development, stressing that equal investment and recognition will go a long way in motivating the female athletes.

“It’s time to recognize that the face of Ghanaian football is no longer just male-dominated. Our women are rising—and rising strong. Let’s invest in their training, facilities, and welfare. Let’s fill the stadiums for their matches too,” she urged.

The MP’s bold comments have sparked positive conversations on social media, with many Ghanaians praising her for boldly championing women’s empowerment beyond politics.

A known advocate for women and youth, Hon. Dziwornu has always aligned herself with inclusive development. Since assuming office following her victory in the 2024 general elections, where she garnered 15,438 votes to narrowly beat her NPP contender, she has maintained a strong focus on social justice, gender equity, and grassroots empowerment.

She is currently spearheading several developmental projects in Akuapem South, ranging from youth skills training programs to women-led agribusiness initiatives. As part of her broader development agenda, she has also promised to lobby for sports infrastructure within the constituency to promote talent development and community engagement.

Hon. Dziwornu is a proud alumna of Aburi Girls’ Senior High School and the University of Ghana. She later pursued graduate studies at Robert Gordon University in the UK, where she earned a master’s degree in Public Policy and Management.

Her background, coupled with her passion for change, has positioned her as a rising star in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), where she continues to push for reforms that empower the underserved.

With this latest public endorsement of the Black Queens, Hon. Lawrencia Dziwornu joins a growing number of national figures calling for gender equality in sports, cementing her position not just as a politician, but as a voice for change.
