Afigya Kwabre South Empowers 87 PWDs with Livelihood Support from Disability Common Fund

The Afigya Kwabre South Municipal Assembly has empowered eighty-seven persons with disabilities (PWDs) with cash grants and livelihood equipment through the Disability Fund of the District Assembly Common Fund, in a renewed effort to promote economic independence and social inclusion within the municipality.

The presentation ceremony, which took place on Thursday, December 18, 2025, brought together beneficiaries from various communities across the municipality. The support package comprised cash allocations, sewing machines, deep freezers and refrigerators to enable recipients to establish or expand small-scale businesses and improve their overall standard of living.

Some of the beneficiaries are expected to invest the support in trading and farming activities, while others will use the assistance to address pressing health and educational needs, in line with the objectives of the Disability Common Fund.

Speaking at the event, the Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Cheslyn Nutsugah, said the government remains committed to sustaining social protection programmes that reduce the vulnerability of persons with disabilities and enhance their livelihoods. He explained that the high number of beneficiaries recorded this year was due to an extensive registration exercise conducted in all communities within the municipality to ensure that no eligible person was left out.

Mr. Nutsugah expressed optimism that the intervention would significantly reduce street begging in the area, stressing that the resources provided are sufficient to help beneficiaries become self-reliant if used responsibly.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Patricia Pearl Ankrah, urged the beneficiaries to appreciate the support provided by the government and put it to productive use rather than dwelling on challenges associated with unemployment. She encouraged them to remain focused, ambitious and patient as they grow their enterprises, noting that discipline and perseverance are key to achieving long-term economic stability.

Madam Ankrah reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to inclusive development and pledged continued support for initiatives that empower persons with disabilities to live dignified and independent lives.

The Disability Common Fund is a statutory allocation designed to support economic empowerment, reduce poverty and promote the full participation of persons with disabilities in local development processes.
